Preface

Do you know what The Coronavirus(Covid -19) is? Do you know what is one way we

can help prevent the spread. Covid-19 was first detected in Wuhan, China, and in late 2019 it set

off a global pandemic. Around the world there are lockdowns in place to help prevent the virus

to continue spreading. Something that each of us can do to help prevent this virus is to wear

masks. Masks help you breathe in cleaner air that keeps out the virus and also prevents you from

touching your face because our hands hold most of the germs. We may not realize it but we

actually touch a lot of things with our bare hands and there are many germs, So wearing a mask

can help prevent you from touching your face.

Masks don’t just protect me but also my family and my community. I’ve noticed that

some people don’t have reusable masks, So I want to make washable and reusable masks

accessible for those at the school who may be in need of them. My main audience is the Kihei

Charter High School. If we do end up going back to school grounds, I would like to give the

school masks for students who may need them or may lose them during the day. Some problems

that may occur are timing how much time I have to make the masks and also whether or not we

go back to school. My main mentor is my mom (Ka’ala) because she is the one who will help me

the most through this project by teaching how to sew and make masks.Financially I give myself

a month to learn to sew first, then two month to fully finish making the masks and then give

them to the school. We will be going together to get some fabrics that go with the school. A

milestone that I have passed is getting to talk to my mentor of course and a goal I have for this
Mamuad 3

project is making about 50-100 masks for the school. Another goal I have is to make a flier to

promote my product so students can see that we have extra for students if they need masks.

Driving Question

How can I help the environment and the current Pandemic issue?

Specialized Mentor

I am glad that we get the chance to find a mentor for our projects to help us. My main

mentor is Ka’ala Mamuad, who is also my mother. She will be helping me learn to sew and also

will be helping pick a design of mask we will be making. She has a lot of experience making

masks and sewing in general. She makes masks for her own small business but was willing to

help teach me and instruct me on my next steps. I also have the help of Cheryllani McCormack.

Cheryllani also is giving me advice on my whole project and also how I can advertise to the

students at Kihei Charter High School.

Key Content Knowledge

Why is it so important to wear a mask? What does it really do for us? Masks are

recommended for us as a simple shield or barrier to help prevent the spread. In scientific terms it

helps prevent the respiratory droplets from traveling through the air into someone's face. So by

wearing a mask if a person coughs next you the masks will keep off the respiratory droplets and

instead you will breathe in cleaner air. This process is called a source control.
Mamuad 4

Masks also stop you from touching your face. A reason we need to not be touching our

face is because there are up to five million germs on each one of our hands. As we think about

that, How many times do you touch your face? All the germs that have touched your hand could

now be all over your face. This is also how common colds start but with Covid-19 it is very

serious that we do our best to not touch our faces unless our hand is clean and sanitized.

So Questions that may occur are “If you are making it, won’t it have germs from your

hands?” Throughout this project I will continuously be sanitizing my hands and washing them to

make sure they are as clean as possible. I will also put the completed masks in a ziplock bag.

These ziplock bags will also be sanitized. Another step to ensure clean contact well handing

these masks out I will be wearing a mask and also will be wearing gloves.

21st Century skills

For this project I definitely will be using a lot of 21st century skills. These are the skills

that I believe I will be using throughout this project :

1. Information Skills - I have to look up information on why it is important to wear a mask

and also information on Covid-19.

2. Communication Skills - Communication is a Skill we all use everyday. I definitely will

be using this skill because I need to talk with my mentors and advisors.

3. Thinking and Problem Solving - In life we all will face some time of problem such as

health or just simple problems. The problem that I want to solve is Making sure students

have a mask to wear at school for their safety and the safety of their classmates. Which is
Mamuad 5

a big part in the making of a senior project, Fine a problem you wanna solve and do

something in your power that can help.

4. Interpersonal Skills - For this project I will definitely be using this skill because I will be

showing respect for my mentor and focusing on what I must do.

5. Self-Directional Skill - For this project I am learning so much. For example, I am

learning how to do so, what's happening around the world, and the importance of wearing

a mask.

6. Global Awareness - Global awareness is something that should be part of all our projects.

For my project I am aware that there is a Global pandemic and something we all should

be doing is wearing masks.

7. Financial, Economic, and Business Literacy - The skill helps me make the right choice

while moving forward in the project. When I heard that people are finding facemasks in

our oceans, I thought that I should make washable masks that can be reused.

8. Civic Literacy and Engagement - I will be contributing to my community. I am making

masks to donate to the school for students who may not have masks or may lose there's

during school.

Limitations

With any kind of project there will always be some type of problem that we may face.

For this project in particular some problems that I may face are timing and whether we go back

to school. Timing, for this project I have to learn how to sew and use the sewing machine

correctly. This takes a good fraction of time because if I don't know how then I could break the
Mamuad 6

machine. Whether we go back to school, this is also a big factor because the masks I will be

making are for the school. I would still give them to the school but, it was more for if we do end

up going to school so that when students go back they have a face mask covering for their safety

and everyone else in the schools safety. A new problem that I face is that Coach Federoff just

mentioned the school having a stock of masks.

Deliverables

For the safety of the students, the teachers, and their families I will be turning in hand

made/ washable masks for students to have. With these masks I will also be handing out an

information paper that tells the student how to care for their mask. It will also say why its

important to wear a mask. When I will be handing out these masks while wearing a mask of my

own and also wearing gloves. The gloves will help prevent contact and will also keep the masks

extra clean to give to a student.

Resources and Activities

Of course there are many materials that go with the process of making a mask. The

materials that I will be using are fabric, thread, a sewing machine, elastic, beads, Ironing board

and an iron. Of course the resources that will be used to make the mask are the fabric, elastic,

and the beads. The sewing machine, ironing board, and the iron is for the process of making the
Mamuad 7

mask. The ironing materials help with making it flat so it is easier to sew it together and of

course the sewing machine would be the big part of putting everything together.

Budget

For this project we will be paying for most of the cost of this project. I don’t have a set

price for everything in this project. The things that we will be paying for are the elastic and

fabric. Once I get these set prices I will be entering them into the project ad adding up the cost.

The elastic will be getting shipped out and we will be going to store shortly to get fabric for these

masks.
