How does each of the Climatic controls affect where we Live: Vancouver

Solar Radiation
Solar radiation received at higher latitudes of the Earth are not as intense as they are at the
equator. Because of this Vancouver experiences less solar radiation because of energy is
spread over a larger area of the surface, which results in cooler temperature.

Wind Systems
Jet streams affect the climate of Vancouver by affecting the rate of winds. The Westerly
winds affect Vancouver which creates warm air.

Ocean Currents
Vancouver has moderate temperatures and a lot of precipitation due to its location near the
Pacific Ocean. Being as close as we are to the Pacific Ocean brings moisture to the interior.

Land masses and bodies of water

The ocean stores solar radiation which distributes heat and moisture around the globe and
drives weather system. The ocean moderates the climate, absorbing heat during warm
periods and releasing it during cold periods.

Altitude
The highest point in Bc stands 150+m above sea level. The higher the latitude the thinner
the air which means the atmosphere is not able to retain as much heat. Vancouver has low
altitude as it is near surface level, therefore it has a warmer climate compared to other
regions around the world.

Mountains
A mountain has one side that can be called the rainy side and the other side is the non rainy
side. Vancouver is located on the rainy side of a mountain which creates its rainy climate.
Because of the mountains that surround Vancouver, wind is often blocked.

Local Influences
-Pollution (carbon emissions) can affect the climate as it can alter the radiation balance,
photosynthesis and evaporation. The urban heat island in Vancouver ( downtown) affects
Vancouver climate as well.
-deforestation
