Dear Wendel Sebastian,

Please find enclosed the manuscript of the paper “Damping-Based Design of structures for
vibration serviceability” for the possible publication in Structures and Buildings.

In this work, a new design approach for structures prone to vibrate (lightweight and very slender
structures) is presented. This concept here named as Damping-Based Design (DBD) is focused
on structures with a sizing determined by meeting the vibration serviceability limit state.
Currently, when vibration problems arise at the structural design stage, engineers and practitioners
tend to solve them by means of increasing the mass or the stiffness of the structure. This actually
means to oversize the structure just for overcoming the vibration. However, these approaches do
not consider a much more effective solution based on increasing the structural damping. Then,
DBD is based on integrating damping elements since the design stage that assures a minimum
structural damping in order to meet the vibration serviceability, without increasing the use of
material.
In this sense, this paper also presents a brief but clear introductory review of some consolidated
and available damping techniques that could be integrated for the design of modern and
lightweight structures. Finally, there have been presented four typical cases of study in which this
new design methodology can solve the vibration issue in the most efficient way.

We hope that this paper will comply with the high standards of your journal. Please do not hesitate
to ask any question.
