CAUTION: l After removing timing chain, do not turn the crankshaft and camshaft
separately, or the valves will strike the pistons.
l Before removing the upper oil pan, remove the crankshaft position
sensor (POS).
l Be careful not to damage sensor edges.
REMOVAL
1. Remove oil pan (lower) and (upper). Refer to "REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION".
2. Remove front timing chain case. Refer to "REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION".
3. Remove timing chains and related components. Refer to "REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION" and
"REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION (SECONDARY TIMING CHAIN TENSIONER)".
4. Remove water pump, if necessary. Refer to "REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION ".
5. Remove rear timing chain case as follows:
a. Loosen and remove bolts using power tool in reverse order as shown in the illustration.
b. Cut liquid gasket using Tool and remove rear timing chain case.
6. Remove O-rings from cylinder head and camshaft bracket (No. 1).

c. Apply liquid gasket using Tool to rear timing chain case back side as shown in the illustration.
CAUTION: l For "A", completely wipe off liquid gasket covering the
area shown in the illustration.
l Apply liquid gasket on installation position of water pump
and cylinder head very completely.

d. Align rear timing chain case with dowel pins (right and left) on cylinder block and install rear
timing chain case.
l Make sure O-rings stay in place during installation to cylinder block, cylinder head and
camshaft bracket (No. 1).
e. Tighten bolts in numerical order as shown in the illustration.
l There are two type of bolts with different torque specifications. Refer to the following for

l Before starting engine, check oil/fluid levels including engine coolant and engine oil. If less than required
quantity, fill to the specified level. Refer to "FOR USA AND CANADA : FLUIDS AND
LUBRICANTS " (United States and Canada) and "FOR MEXICO : FLUIDS AND LUBRICANTS
" (Mexico).
l Use procedure below to check for fuel leakage.
l Turn ignition switch ON (with engine stopped). With fuel pressure applied to fuel piping, check for fuel
leakage at connection points.
l Start engine. With engine speed increased, check again for fuel leakage at connection points.
l Run engine to check for unusual noise and vibration.
NOTE: If hydraulic pressure inside timing chain tensioner drops after removal and
installation, slack in the guide may generate a pounding noise during and
just after engine start. However, this is normal. Noise will stop after
hydraulic pressure rises.
l Warm up engine thoroughly to make sure there is no leakage of fuel, exhaust gas, or any oils/fluids
including engine oil and engine coolant.
l Bleed air from passages in lines and hoses, such as in cooling system.
l After cooling down engine, again check oil/fluid levels including engine oil and engine coolant. Refill to
