Chapter 10 Reflection

Creativity. Freedom. Music. Those three things are what it took to develop myself as a

musician. Reading this chapter assured me that I took the right steps. It was so intriguing to

read the list of things that add to the creativeness of a given person. So many people are more

creative than they think they are, and it is so amazing to see that. I thoroughly enjoyed reading

about Howard Gardner’s learning styles and approaches. I had heard about his different types

of learners, and I truly love his breakdown of them. I also enjoyed reading about the multiple

intelligences and what they entail. I definitely think it would be cool to use these in my future

classroom to get to know students and learn their best approach to learning.

Marsh and Young’s musical play chart by age group also caught my attention when

reading. I find it interesting to know how far along children should be by their age groups and

what accomplishments should be reached by then. I had never really heard of the phrase

“musical play” until now, so it was nice to learn new things with Marsh’s characteristics. One of

my favorite parts of this chapter was the portion about creativity through improvisation. As I

said at the beginning, freedom was one of the biggest things that allowed me to develop in

music, and that included improvisation. When a musician can begin to create their own

melodies and beats, they are more likely to become intrigued with what they are doing. I really

enjoyed reading the different forms of improvisation based on instruments, body percussion,
and voice. I remember doing notation for many things as a child, so I loved seeing the notations

at the end of the chapter. I think they can easily help students understand and become one

with their music.
