Lesson Plan # 16
Lab A
We Can Be Brave Every Day

Date: March 31, 2020

Supervisor: Amanda McGuire
Lead Teacher: Jessalyn Westwood #3

Preassessment and Findings:

S has goals to make friends and to be braver. During her home visit she showed her new book about being brave. P when asked to participate in the PPVT was scared to leave the
classroom but said that the knight gear made him feel braver. He has a very hard time trying new things, so we should encourage him to try new things. We have goals to help
children become play leaders including K. We have goals to help children be more social with the other children. We want H to start conversations with other children. We want L
to play with other children and to be a play leader. We have social goals for C, N, J, J, and H. B is always asking for new activities and has no problems trying new things.
Children Receiving Specific Focus Today:

1. J- Our goals for J include emotional regulation and speech. We want to work on his words because he has some difficulty with the beginning and end sounds of words. We want
him to have successful conversations with teachers and with the other children.
2.S- Our goals for S include empathy training and perspective taking. We want to work on her interactions with others and her understanding of empathy and the way others may
feel.
3.C- Our goals for C include working on boundaries and sharing. We also decided to start working on emotional regulation with him. Science was planned for Crew today.
4.B- Our goal for B includes working on literacy. This topic is something that allows us to provide literacy opportunities with activities and topics he may be more familiar with
and can allow us to have conversations and help him to be more interested in literacy. The science activity was planned for him.

Ideas to be Emphasized and Overall Goals:

1. We are brave when we try new things and talk to new people.
2. Bravery does not only show when big tasks are accomplished, sometimes small things require bravery too.

Research about Topic:

Courage is the choice and willingness to confront agony, pain, danger, uncertainty, or intimidation.

Children need courage when they:

try new things even if they are scared, like learning to ride a bike or entering a new social situation.

keep trying to master a new skill even when they are frustrated, or other children laugh at their attempts.

do the ‘right’ thing in difficult situations, like standing up for another child who is being bullied.

admit to mistakes, like owning up to breaking a neighbor’s window while playing ball and then apologizing and offering to help clean up and pay for the damage.

Having courage helps children to persevere against challenges, and in the process, it raises their self-esteem. When children feel good about themselves and see that they have the
personal power to make courageous choices, they are more likely to lead personally satisfying and successful lives.

3 – 4-YEAR-OLDS:
Three to four-year-olds still are often controlled by their self-centered, egotistical impulses. Because of their developmental level, these children perceive other people and things
to have meaning only in relation to themselves. Their ability to be courageous may be influenced by their perceptions, needs, and desires of the moment. The personality of a child
will also have an influence. Some are bold, others are cautious. As they experience danger and fear, they are also learning about trust. Because of their anxiety about the situation,
youngsters this age may be unable to confront and overcome their concerns. Children of these ages have short attention spans. This may contribute to their inability to follow
through the situation to its conclusion.
