Grade 10 Semester 2 Prep Activity (Formative)

Name: Isabela Giraldo

1. Welcome back! What did you do over the break? Even if you didn’t go anywhere, in a short
paragraph (3-4 sentences) share what you did to keep you busy. Be descriptive!

During break I traveled to Mexico with my parents. We visited four cities in total, Guanajuato, San
Miguel de Allende, Queretaro and Mexico City. The most interesting things I did was that I rode an
aerostatics balloon, visited the Aztecas’ pyramids, visited the Anthropology museum and ate great
food. I had a lot of fun and learned a lot about the culture. Mexico turned out to be my favorite
country from all I have visited.

2. Share three pictures from your break and provide a one sentence explanation for each.

This is sunset at San

Miguel, a city full of
old buildings.

These pictures are

from the day I rode the
aerostatics balloon
over the pyramids.

This picture was taken

in the Anthropology
Museum with La Piedra
del Sol, the Aztec’s
calendar.

4. Reflect on semester one: What do you think went well and what would you like to improve for
semester two? Please provide information in complete sentences and try to use specific
examples.

I think most things worked for me during semester one. I was very responsable with my work and
understood all of the topics we learned. I think something I could improve for next semester is the
concentration during class in order to have a better understanding and learning of the topics.

Read the following course description for homeostasis. This is our unit for quarter three and below
are listed the three major standards (E1, E2, and E3) as well as the benchmarks in Jupiter
Colegio Granadino - Biology

E. Homeostasis
• E1. Evaluate the impact on the human body of selected chemical substances and of
environmental factors related to human activity;
o E1.1 Case Studies: Assess, on the basis of findings from a case study, the effects on
the human body of taking chemical substances to enhance performance or improve
health (e.g., the risks and benefits of taking large quantities of vitamins or amino
acids; the effects on the human body of substances that people use to cope with
stress)
o E1.2 Exposure to Chemicals: Evaluate, on the basis of research, some of the human
health issues that arise from the impact of human activities on the environment (e.g.,
the effects of synthetic estrogen compounds released into our water systems; the
effects of leaching of compounds from plastic products into soil and water).
• E2. Investigate the feedback mechanisms that maintain homeostasis in living organisms.
o E2.1 Terminology: Use appropriate terminology related to homeostasis, including, but
not limited to: insulin, testosterone, estrogen, nephron, dialysis, pituitary, synapse,
and acetylcholine
o E2.2 Models of Action: Plan and construct a model to illustrate the essential
components of the homeostatic process (e.g., create a flow chart that illustrates
representative feedback mechanisms in living things)
o E2.3 Applications: Plan and conduct an investigation to study the response mechanism
of an invertebrate to external stimuli (e.g., stimulus response loop or the instinctive
behaviour of an invertebrate in response to a stimulus such as light), using appropriate
laboratory equipment and techniques.
• E3. Demonstrate an understanding of the anatomy and physiology of human body systems,
and explain the mechanisms that enable the body to maintain homeostasis.
o E3.1 Anatomy Systems: Describe the anatomy and physiology of the endocrine,
excretory, and nervous systems, and explain how these systems interact to maintain
homeostasis
o E3.2 Reproductive Hormones: Explain how reproductive hormones act in human
feedback mechanisms to maintain homeostasis (e.g., the actions of male and female
reproductive hormones on their respective body systems)
o E3.3 Equilibrium Levels: Describe the homeostatic processes involving in maintaining
water, ionic, thermal, and acid-base equilibrium, and explaining how these processes
help body systems respond to both a change in environment and the effects of medical
treatments.

3. In this list, what do you feel you want to learn about most and why? How do you feel that
these can relate to your everyday life? Provide at least one idea for a project with any one of the
listed topics.
I really feel this topic interests me because it has a lot to do with the condition I have. This can
relate to my everyday life because sometimes I do not quite understand why somethings happen in
my body. One project I would like to do is the disease investigation because I would like to
investigate more thoroughly my disease.

4. Finally, provide links to three websites (not just the first one on Google, please…) that you
think could help you find information about the topics you described in question three:

Evaluation: Formative

A1.1 Language Skills: Communicate ideas, plans, procedures, results, and conclusions orally, in
writing, and/or in electronic presentations, using appropriate language and a variety of formats
(e.g., data tables, laboratory reports, presentations, debates, simulations, models).

E2.1 Terminology: Use appropriate terminology related to homeostasis, including, but not limited to:
insulin, testosterone, estrogen, nephron, dialysis, pituitary, synapse, and acetylcholine
