ADVANCED COMPOSITE MATERIALS

Introduction

Composites are classified according to their matrix phase. They are

Polymer matrix composites (PMC's)

ceramic matrix composites (CMC's)

metal matrix composites (MMC's).

 Materials within these categories are often called "advanced composite materials” if they combine together they possesses the
properties of high strength and high stiffness, low weight, corrosion resistance materials.

Advanced composites have been identified as an important growth sector in U.S.

manufacturing.  This identification has led to more use of these materials in existing facilities as
well as an increase in the number of advanced composites manufacturing locations.
