Genes and DNA

Humans have 46 chromosomes for each cell in the body. 23 come from each
parent. Each strand of DNA has specific areas that carry the plan fort a
particular body trait. This is called a gene

We have genes for hair colour, height, face shape, blood type, even asthma
and illnesses. You have two genes for almost every trait - one from your mum
and one from your dad.

This means that there are two genes that provide two plans for each trait.
There is a special way that decides which trait is shown or expressed.

Different genes are dominant, recessive or sometimes co-dominant. A

dominant gene will be expressed over a recessive gene. Co-dominant genes
will both be expressed but this is rare in humans.
