A LETTER FROM MS.

MCKENNA

Dear Families,

Throughout the next few weeks, our Resource Room class will be learning about

argument writing. The unit will last approximately two weeks. We will learn about the

writing process including prewriting, drafting, revising, editing, and publishing. We will also

learn the proper format for writing argumentative pieces including an introduction, three

body paragraphs, and a conclusion.

This unit will allow students to work on their individual reading and writing IEP

goals. In practicing writing an argumentative essay, students will be working to improve

specific needs including organizing thoughts, elaborating on ideas, editing and revising

their written work, citing textual evidence, and including all necessary components in their

writing. The unit will also meet the Common Core State Standards.

Technology will be used throughout the unit to support and engage students in

learning. The use of technology will enhance learning by using tools that will help students

to produce clear and coherent writing pieces. Technology will also be included to support

collaboration among students.

On our Weebly website (mckennaresource.weebly.com), you can find the calendar

and outline of this unit as well as upcoming due dates for assignments. The website also

includes resources for at-home practice and support. A great resource listed is Argument

Wars from iCivics. This is a fun and competitive game that allows students to practice

making arguments.

If you have any questions please feel free to contact me at cmckenna@hewlett-

woodmere.net. I am available for extra help on Tuesdays at 2:40 or by appointment.

Sincerely,

Ms. McKenna
