By: Trisha Larraine P. Lopez Winning does not only mean being number one. Winning does not mean being ahead of others, but winning can be in different forms. In the Miss PUP 2019 beauty pageant that happened in the foundation week of the Polytechnic University of the Philippines, each contestant has their own unique and beautiful advocacy, and getting the crown or not, they have won the hearts of many. One of the candidates was the Miss College of Communications, crowned as the Miss PUP 2019 first runner up, Ms. Diane Soriano. The talk with Ate Diane is mainly about her thoughts, struggles, inspirations, and her advocacy in the pageant. According to her, she had already experienced joining pageants before, especially in her past school during her junior high school days. Even so, joining Miss PUP 2019 is her biggest pageant and was a milestone for her. Knowing that the Miss PUP 2017 was from her college, she was pressured but it drove her to do her best in getting the crown back, but unfortunately, she was not able to. There are struggles that she faced in the process, and in order to overcome it, she always thinks about her inspirations (her family, her boyfriend, her classmates, the Communications Society, the COC Student Council and the whole COC community), and the drive to win - kasi kung gusto mo talaga, gagawin mo ang lahat. Her advocacy is #Real&Raw, which is all about self love and self empowerment. She talked about how she was bullied because of her looks, - Kasi dati mukha akong bumbay, kalakip non ay may negative connotation tayo sa mga bumbay. - her dark skin, and her thin body. As she was growing older, especially when she enrolled in PUP, she learned to value her imperfections more, because in the community, there are no judgements. There are far more things that matter such as intelligence and diskarte. She chose that advocacy because according to her, I want to tell everyone na kung ano mang meron kayo - stretch marks, acne, dark skin, dark hair, dark underarms, kahit ano man yan. Wala siyang connection sa kung ano ka kasi I believe na yung mga qualities na yon, natural lang siya sa isang tao. Kaya Real and Raw kasi those are real qualities, those are real characteristics of a human being and I believe being real and raw makes you beautiful. She ended the talk by saying a message to the students of our Sintang Paaralan which goes: Sa mga PUPians, use those imperfections as your tool to empower yourself. Kasi kunwari, marami akong acne but it doesnt stop there. Matalino ako. Madiskarte ako. So gagamitin mo yung mga negative sides sa pagkatao mo into something positive. Being a queen does not necessarily mean having a crown, being tall, being physically appealing, but it is all in the heart, in values, and in beliefs. Its all about the influence - being able to touch the hearts of people, being able to empower and inspire them are way more important than titles.

FAST TALK: BEAUTY QUEEN EDITION
by: Trisha Larraine P. Lopez
Strength. Wisdom. Beauty.
These are the qualities that the women from different colleges had to be qualified as a beauty queen. They have the looks, they have the wits. But even if they are beauty queens, they still differ in preferences, beliefs, values, and the likes. In order to know more about the candidates of the Miss PUP 2019 pageant, I conducted a fast-talk on some of the candidates. The rules are simple, they have to answer as many questions as they can for 1 minute and 30 seconds. Also, they are told that they should think of this as a game wherein they can have fun and no pressure intended, and it resulted to ending the fast-talks with a smile on each candidates faces - and their beautiful smiles were precious.
