T started cosplaying prior to it being called cosplay, back when it ‘was called "dressing up” I have always loved Halloween and themed parties since I was a child, While I was in Atlanta, Georgia, I happened upon DragonCon where I was introduced to the opportunity to, not only get with like-minded people to honor my fandom, but to embody those characters as well It was a no brainer. What was the first event/con you cosplayed at and how did it feel to cosplay in a crowd the first time? ‘The first con that I offically cosplayed at was DragonCon. I loved it because it was more taboo to not be in costume than to be in costume. Watching so many of the characters that I admire brought to life for a thriling weekend was the closest thing I had to a utopia atthe time. Why did you decide to start cosplaying characters from X-Men and the specific ones you have cosplayed as so far? Tadore the X-Men and their plight. Oppression, discrimination, and persecution are unfortunately present and growing, The X-Men were persecuted simply because they are mutants. I identified with their struggle and often drew strength from their stories as I navigated life ina world where I was often met with oppression. 1 started to migrate toward the characters that had powers I desired and exuded traits that I admired. For example, Gambit is suave, stylish, a loves, handsome, quick-witted and full of finesse. Bishop is a profound Back man, that is strong, well-traveled, knowledgeable and determined to right the wrongs of past transgressions. Warpath is honorable, swift, under-represented, family oriented and proud with heightened senses. Magneto wants mutants to be accepted and respected and will o as far as he needs to go to bring that reality to fruition. And Storm, the powerful mutant with control over the elements, that is regal, a natural bom leader and stunningly beautiful with a tortured past and unlimited Potential. Those all are traits that I felt were representative of my personal existence. They are dynamic. characters that do not let their issues prevent them from being the best that they can be. I plan on doing a genderbend Rogue and my ideal cosplay, if all the stars align, is Nightcrawler, Do you have any stories of interacting with X-Men fans while in one of the X-Men cosplays? One of my favorite stories is when a few of my fellow mutant friends and I decided to all be versions of Storm. It was epic. Not only was it impressive to see a group of Storms representing all of her embodiments over the years, it was a statement of solidarity that resonated with fans. From that cosplay, fans wanted to discuss everything from doing a successful group cosplay with friends and ‘enderbending cosplays, to learning how to “cosplay your way” by bringing one's own uniqueness to their cosplay. When did you start cosplaying and why did you decide to try it? I started cosplaying many years ago. A friend and I were told by another friend about a convention that was coming up. She was surprised that we were not already going. It sounded like fun so we bought asses and ended up going to our very first DragonCon. I had so much fun that I wanted to become more involved. I didn't have time to get a costume together for that first year, but I have been cosplaying every other year since. Who was your first character and from what? For my second year at DragonCon, I stil didn't know much about cosplay. I went through old Halloween Costumes for something to wear. I picked Bamm-Bamm [Rubble] from The Flintstones. 1 stepped it up in the years that followed, but this was an easy start. What was the first event/con you cosplayed at and how did it feel to cosplay in a crowd the first time? My first convention was DragonCon in Atlanta, GA. I was so excited. I looked around and saw so many costumes, and everyone was so welcoming. It didn't take long for me to realize that this was going to be something that I was going to do every year. Why did you decide to start cosplaying characters from X-Men and the specific ones you have cosplayed as so far? My friends and I do group cosplays every year at DragonCon. One year we decided to do a Storm group, where we would all do different versions of Storm. Storm is my favorite female X-Men character, so I wanted to do it justice. I also wanted to do one that was not common. I was introduced to Asgardian Storm. Her costume was amazing. I was, immediately, hooked. I did a genderbent version of Asgardian Storm. Later I decided to do Forge. I don't do minority characters, exclusively, but I'm usually more drawn to them. Forge is an amazing Native American character who gets overlooked. He has genius level intelligence and he can, pretty much, invent anything ‘that comes to his mind. I became very interested in his story. Are there plans to cosplay as any other X-Men characters or versions of ones. you have already in the future? T've never done a mashup cosplay. One concept that I have is to see how many X-Men characters I can do in one cosplay. I'm still trying to work it out in my head. I'm making a list of distinct characteristics, so that each character can be identifiable. Do you have any stories of interacting with X-Men fans while in one of the X-Men cosplays? My most memorable X-Men cosplay moment was when my friends and I did our Storm group cosplay. We were heading to a photoshoot, It was hard to get there because People kept stopping us. On more than one occasion, ‘adults well into their 30's, 40's and older, have teared up and turned back into their giddy childhood selves, when encountering me as Gambit, I brought a plece of thelr childhood back to them. I know I have done well, not when they say "Gambit is my favorite X-Men,” but when they say "You were my favorite X-Men.” It's at that moment that I know they have accepted me as the "real Gambit” and that the experience and illusion [have created has convinced them, even if subconsciously, that they have just met their childhood favorite.
