community, attachment, and performance, is associated with reduced potential for substance abuse. As
a teacher, you can help a student have a positive relationship with their school by:
Setting clear rules and boundaries that are consistently enforced in a reasonable and measured manner;
Giving praise and reward for students’ good behaviour, achievements and accomplishments;
As teachers we can also correct certain misconceptions that our students may have about alcohol or
substance abuse in general, Namely that "it's the norm and everyone is doing it". This is one of the main
reasons why teenagers drink alcohol. As educators we can teach them about the various drawbacks of
drinking alcohol through the use of presentations in classes or posters with a powerful message.
