‘The project isa bullding renovation - a half building renovation specitically,
because the other halt Is owned by another person - designed to accommodate
‘wo distinctive functions. The ground floor Is occupied fora furniture and
painting gallery, while the first floor is utilized for a beauty lounge. The existing
structure and roof shape is sustained to maintain a similarity in form withthe
building that is next to it. New designs are only applied forthe interior and the
facade of the bullding
‘The bullding Is sitad on JI, Bangka. Buildings in Bangka and Kemang are famous
for their heterogeneous facades, To explore something unique that differ from
their environment was not an easy task. We decided to use glass as the facade
to exhibit the inner space of the building. We applied fragmented glass that are
tached into smaller fragments then rearranged in disarray forms. Ths results|
ina totally distinguished impression compared to the minimalist facades that are
seen in the Bangka-Kemang area. On the front fagade, we applied fragmented
lass arranged on aitferent elevations to create a sense of reflection and
transparency at various levels - depending on the intensity of light. The access
to the gallery and beauty lounge are different to support their distinctive
activities. The beauty lounge is accessible through a ramp that is placed at the
entrance. The interior ofthe gallery is designed as a quiet space to reveal the
existence of paintings as artworks. With the limited budget, some parts of the
building are exposed - showing beams and rough cement concrete. Mortar is
used for the floors and most celings are covered by gypsum. Some walls ara
treated with corrugated cement plaster while others are covered by white
painted gypsum. On the front side of the gallery we designed a clear glass
flooring stage that distributes the reflection of the pool. The ceiling inthis area
is made of dropped wood louvres to create an extraordinary feeling when sensed
as an entry. The beauly lounge on the first flor serves various activites which
has resulted in the space to be divided into smaller spaces. To lessen the
hampered sense, the partitions inthis floor are designed to ‘leak’. Dividers
betwen the waiting area and the bar and partitions between the make-up, hair
treatment areas and massage areas are contsructed to achieve a sense of
flowing space both visually and psychologically Wood is chosen as the essential
material to support a warm ambience of the lounge. An office and gallery are
placed atthe rear side with optimum natural lighting. Statf are organised in an
‘open space area, while the director has his own room with a garden view.project data
