Tisoy Brown

Tisoy Brown is a play performed by the artists of Dulaang UP. It tells the life story

of Tisoy Brown, a Fil-am man, living in the busy and colorful sub-urban Subic. My first

impression of him is that he is a lazy yet charismatic and daring young man. During the

first part of the play, he was recounting his encounter with an American helicopter and

how he managed to fight the soldiers and pilot within it. He retold the story to his

mother in great detail to the extent that he was already enacting the events using large

body movements and somehow exaggerated actions.

The play also showcased a lot of production numbers—from the disco dance, to

ballroom dance, and also to sensual and naughty dances. During the first half of the

play, sensual dances were prominent and the actors and actresses even displayed a

touch of burlesque theme on the scene where Tisoy Brown met with the princess of

monsters in a bar. Monster-like movements in some of the dances performed by the

father of the princess and his fellow monsters were also seen on the part when Tisoy

Brown was invited to the kingdom of the monsters. The latter part of the play displayed

interpretative dances about the wasted life of Tisoy Brown who was deemed as “Hari ng

Wala”.
Overall, the play was well thought of and magnificently executed by the actors

and actresses. I really like how the dancers showed great bodily movements in both the

lively and sensual dances because their performances really captured my attention.
