The Dressing Room

The Dressing Room is another play conducted by Dulaang UP and its prominent

artists. It is a Filipino adaptation of a Japanese play. It depicts the lives of an actress

who plays the role of Nina in a foreign play, who is a frustrated theater artists and the

midnight adventures of two phantoms of dead female artists (whose roles were played

by two male actors) who hunt the backstage of the play.

The opening number of the play immediately caught my attention because the

actors and dancers showcased a Japanese traditional dance which name that I did not

really know. All I can remember is that it was a strong and powerful yet mysterious and

chilling dance. I felt a bit scared during their performance probably because the

ambience of the stage was dark and the faces of the actors and dancers were all white

and pale. Their body movements were big and quick as if they were ninjas or Japanese

warriors fighting each other. The dances also had a tinge of contemporary jazz or ballet

especially during the middle of the play. Most of the movements of the ghosts were

demure since they were portrayed as geishas. The actors wore white kimono and thick

makeup and this features really added to the realness of the play.

All in all, I enjoyed watching the play because the storyline was interesting and

the message that it conveyed made an impact on how I perceive artists. Their strong and

well executed performances made me pay attention to the play and appreciate it.
