PAST SIMPLE – THE VERB TO BE

The verb to be is irregular in the past. Negative and interrogative sentences with the verb to be are
different from the rest of the verbs (the same as in present simple).

Affirmative Negative Interrogative

I was I wasn’t Was I ...?

You were You weren’t Were you...?

He was He wasn’t Was he...?

She was She wasn’t Was she...?

It was It wasn’t Was it...?

We were We weren’t Were we...?

You were You weren’t Were you...?

They were They weren’t Were they...?

I was born in Barcelona. Where were you born?

My grandma was a housewife.

Peter wasn’t happy when he was a child.

The dog was really angry!

We were really good friends at school.

Were you all in the same class?

Peter and Paul weren’t neighbours in London.
