Color the waste away

For this work I used a mason jar and contour paints. My goal for this work was to spread

awareness about recycling. Glass wastes is one of the biggest problems all over the world. They

don't only harm humans but also disrupt animal habitats. So, I decided to create a work that

would remind people of this problem and give an idea about how they could help the

environment. I found a waste mason jar at home and decided to turn it into something useful

using my art skills. I knew that i wanted to make it something colorful and cheerful and simple at

the same time. My aim was to show how an object that will end up in wastes and pollute the

environment can turn into something helpful with little effort. I outlined patterns on the jar using

black contour paint and after 5 minutes, when it dried, I colored in the patterns with warm and

cold toned colors like yellows, reds, whites. I painted “Buta” patterns also because it has a

significance for my culture. “Buta on the Sanskrit means “fire” (bute-pute-buta). As it is known,

Zoroastrianism is prospered in Azerbaijan. And buta is one of the symbols in difficult symbolic

of Zoroastrianism, that is the symbol of Fire” (Buta as a symbol of Azerbaijan). I put paint

brushes in the mason jar in order to give an idea to the viewers about its use. The name clearly

describes my work as it means, you can color an object and turn it from used to new.
