Lost

For my series I used colored inks with water. For my first work painted big eyes in the

middle of the paper which is inspired by Margaret Keane’s big eyed children paintings and

dripped ink into wet paper to create a watery effect. The inks look like it is coming from the eyes

and while eyes are steady there is a flow to the inks. This symbolizes that the eyes are powerful

and can mean different things as it did in Margaret Keane’s paintings. The eyes in her paintings

symbolized her own emotions and her grief. People didn't know her name or existence so, the

only way she could get her emotions across the viewers was by painting eyes (Hamlin). The

reason I chose to use ink was because it flows easily and it helped me create a explosive feeling

from the eyes. For the second part of the work I painted a galaxy and crystal on the bottom-

middle. This work was also inspired by Margaret Keane, to be more specific, her work called

“Girl in the Garden”. “Girl in the Garden” is a sophisticated work that describes a girl curled up in

a colorful garden, hopeless. The galaxy symbolizes the garden in the painting and the crystals

symbolize the girl. Even thought my version of the work doesn't look like the original work I still

used the same idea. The girl in Margaret Keane’s work has a hopeless look on her face which

shows that she is lost, so, the best way I could paint that was by, creating a galaxy. The crystals,

on the other hand, is a symbol of pureness and healing which perfectly fits in with the girl in M.

Keane’s work. The title of my works is brief but in my opinion it gives a clear description of the

background stories of each.
