ANOTHER DAY IN PARADISE

MARXIST CRITICISM

How long will it stay? When will it end? The social discrimination that pulls down our
humanitarian self. This song “Another Day in Paradise" is a song recorded by English drummer,
singer-songwriter Phil Collins. The track has as its subject the problem of homelessness. The
song is about the women who seeks help. By listening to the music you can understand that it is
about how many people today show no support towards the needy and homelessness. In the first
line of the song where the woman was seeking for help to the man who walks the streets because
she has nowhere to sleep, but the man pretended that he didn’t hear her. It portrays that,
nowadays there are still a lot of people out there just like this woman but those people who are in
the top just ignores them. In this verse that says, “Probably been moved on from every place
because she didn’t fit in there.” It clearly shows the social differences between rich people and
the poor ones. In fact, it should be a place where everyone is equal.
In this part of the song, the man is considering helping her, but he does not want to
sacrifice his own possessions to help somebody else. When looking it under Marxist criticism
you can figure out that it is about the society in general and how we, compared to many others,
live in a land of comfort and “Paradise”. What this song shows is a poor helpless women (People
who represents the poorer and struggling in the world) crying out for help to a man which
symbolizes to those people who are on higher class, who merely goes her.
The work is intended for all people, to help those who are in need, and do not ignore
those poor people because they are also part of the society. Everyone should be treated equally
regardless of its social status, race or tradition. If you’re able to help someone at least do
something about it do not let what people will say against you, drags you down not to help those
people who are in need. This discrimination won’t end unless you will stand up against it, start it
in yourself help people who is in need, give home to those people who don’t have. Let them feel
that they were not discarded of the society that you know. Let them feel that they were part of it.
The song is impressive because the author is able to elaborate this kind of social discrimination
in which it should be stop. However, the song would be better if the author/ song writer includes
more lyrics that would explain further the essence of the song.
