The first revision was brought out in 1976. Since then, a new series of standards for conduits for eleetrical wiring has been brought out and the requirements ‘of rigid. steel conduits for electrical wiring which were carlier covered in IS: 1653-1972 are now covered in IS : 9537 ( Part 2)-1981¥. 0.3 The present revision has been undertaken to bring it in line with the requirements and dimensions specified in IS: 9537 ( Part 2)-1981t. sation for conduits for lectrical installations art? Rigid steel Conduits, (0.4 Fittings complying with this specification shall bbe suitable for usc in an atmosphere not liable to cause excessive corrosion of the conduit by smoke, ‘chemical fumes and salt aden spray. In such cases, ‘the manufacturer shall be consulted in selecting a suitable material and/or finish. [Nore — Screw reducers which are generally tailor-made atoms are not covered by this standard 0.5 For the purpose of deciding whether a particular requirement of this standard is complied with, the final value, observed or calculated, expressing’ the result of & test, shall be rounded off in accordance with IS : 2-1960*. The number of significant places retained in the rounded off value should be the same as that of the specified value in this standard. ~ sRules for rounding off numerical values (revised ), 1, SCOPE L.A This standard specifies the material, dimensions land other requirements of screwed type fittings for Use with rigid steel conduits for electrical wiring purposes conforming to IS : 9537 ( Part 2)-1981°. 1.2 The fittings covered by this standard are: (@) couplers, (6) elbows, (c) tees, (4) bends, and boxes. [Nore — Screw reducers which are generally tailor-made Items are not covered by this standard. 2. TERMINOLOGY 241 For the purpose of this standard, the following definition in addition to those given in IS : 9537 (Part 11980, shall apply. 2.2 Fittings — Accessories used in conjunction with Steel conduits, for the purposes of uniting, changing direction, drawing in and obtaining access to insulated electrical conductors. 3. IS : 2667- 1988 APPENDIX C (Clause 10.6 ) IMPACT TEST C-1, DESCRIPTION OF APPARATUS C-LA_ A typical impact apparatus is shown in Fig. 2. CAL2 The striking element has a hemispherical face of radius 10 mm made of hardwood, polyamide or similar material weighing 0°15 kg. It is rigidly fixed to the lower end of a steel tube with an external diameter of 9mm and thickness 0°5 mm which is pivoted at its upper end in such aw swings only in the vertical plane of striking clement. The axis of the pivol above the axis of the striking element. The desi of the apparatus is such a force between 1°0 and 20 .N has to be applied to the face of the hammer to maintain the pendulum in a horizontal position. C2, PROCEDURE C-2A The fitting under test is held against a solid wall of brick, concrete or the like and the test apparatus is so arranged that the pivot of the pendulum is vertically above the point of impact of the hammer. The hammer is then allowed to fall from a beight of 600 mm. C22 The height of the fall is measured vertically between the point of impact on the sample and the face of the hammer at the point of release. €-2.3 Ten blows shall be applied to points evently distributed over the sample. For boxes, none of the blows shall be applied within 5mm of any knockout. C3. REQUIREMENT 3. After the test, the samples shall show no damage within the meaning of this standard. = Minor cracks may appear without causing rejection provided that such cracks do not permit. excess foconductors or cables.
