ABSTRACT:
At one time project, project management was almost exclusively the property of civil and
construction engineering programs, where it was taught in highly quantitative, technical
matter.
Project management is the practice of initiating, planning, executing, controlling, and closing
the work of a team to achieve specific goals and meet specific success criteria at the specified
time.
The primary challenge of project management is to achieve all of the project goals within the
given constraints. This information is usually described in project documentation, created at
the beginning of the development process. The primary constraints are scope,
time, quality and budget.
In this paper will be discussing the risk & project management that a fictional architecture &
design company “Big Builds”, will be holding & facing to build a house. Will be presenting
the company’s background, objectives & goals, strategy; Developing an SOW (statement of
work) for the project, WBS (work breakdown structure), scheduling and a GANT chart.

STRATEGIES:
Providing creative solutions for land-use, planning, residential and mixed-use architecture is
increasingly a key tenant of urban design. Big Builds Urban Design & Planning practice
focuses on the design of walkable, livable urban communities.
We approach the built environment of each community as a “collage” of its unique people,
politics and place. We believe in the principles of good urbanism – diversity, connectivity,
sustainability. We are known for our strengths in public involvement, graphic communication
and implementation strategies. These strategies are also beneficial to college and university
campuses where walkable, livable communities have become critical components for
attracting and retaining quality faculty and students.
Our work is varied in scale, from individual Buildings & Sites to the civic realm of Streets &
Parks; from the institutional frameworks of Schools & Campuses to distinctive
Neighborhoods & Districts; from regional networks of Corridors & Centers to even entire
Cities & Towns. We have completed more than 350 planning projects across the country, and
our plans have resulted in thousands of new housing units, first-class schools and institutions,
hundreds of acres of new parks and open space, miles of streetscape and dozens of
memorable places.
Big Builds’ Workplace Surveys represent our commitment to understanding what succeeds,
what does not, and what is next in strategy and design.
Thus, organizational decision makers develop guidelines, selection models that permit them
to save time and money while maximizing the likelihood of success.
The project selection that Big Builds is using is the weighted scoring models. It is a method
where each criterion is ranked according to its relative importance.
Page | 10
As we were presented with four different projects, we used the weighted score method to
proceed with project X using the following steps:
- Assign importance weights to each criterion: the first step is that we have developed a
list of criteria assigning to each one an appropriate weight.
- Assign score values to each criterion in terms of its rating,
- Add the weighted scores to arrive at an overall project score,

PROJECT PORTFOLIO MANAGEMENT:
Project portfolio management is the systematic process of selecting, supporting and managing
a firm’s collection of projects. Projects are managed concurrently under a single umbrella and
may be either related or independent of one another.
Big builds sees design as strategy in action, focused on results. We help our clients envision a
better future and get there successfully. We help them leverage design’s power to generate
innovative solutions that affect real transformation.
The Big builds Research Institute is a network of researchers with a singular focus:
developing a deeper understanding of the connection between design, business, and the
human experience. Through a combination of research grants and external partnerships, we
seek insights that will help solve the world's most pressing challenges. We are committed to
unlocking new solutions and strategies that will define the future of design.
Unique among design firms, Big builds works with a cross-section of the world’s economy.
This access provides us insights into the issues driving change across markets. To help
businesses navigate the impact of industry trends on the built environment, our publications
and thought leadership explore how design turns client challenges into competitive
advantages.
Breakthrough ideas emerge from understanding the needs of the people and communities we
serve. Delivering design that is informed, purposeful, innovative, and compelling means we
encourage our people — the industry’s top talent — to explore new solutions to age-old
problems. We reward collaboration and intellectual curiosity — striving to leverage design’s
ability to elevate the everyday.

Triple constraints:
The triple constraints consist of time, scope and cost. The objective of this project is to
achieve the triple constraints.
Our first focus in this project is to complete the constraints within the time mentioned in the
contract.
The second focus is to achieve the target with in given budget and for this purpose, the cost
of different materials is already estimated so that we could not exceed for the given budget.
The third important factor in this project is scope identification. Scope of this project is to
construct house within given time and budget.
Other than this information, the time taken to complete there is also mention in the scope
statement. We will try to not exceed from our scope and finishing the project within the time
and cost limit.
