Exam Study Guide

Please bring:

1) A large Blue Book

2) A pen (Blue or Black ink only)

Format:

Short IDs - You will be provided with a list of 8-10 concepts, terms, events, people, etc. from
which you will select three (3) to answer. Each individual ID is worth 15 points for a total of 45
points.

Essay Question - You will be provided with two (2) essay questions from which you will select
one (1) to answer. The essay portion is worth a total of 55 points.

Expectations:

Short IDs - A good ID response requires you to state who or what the ID is as well as its
significance in the context of the course: when, how and why is the ID important (the so what
question)?

Essay – A good essay response will answer all aspects of the question posed. In addition to
answering the basic components (who, what, when, how), you will be expected to demonstrate
your understanding through thoughtful analysis. In essence, go beyond a simple description and
address the various aspects of the question in the context of the course thus far. Your analysis
should draw on the assigned readings, class lecture and discussion, and videos.

Preparation:

First, review the Syllabus and Lecture Schedule to identify the major themes, issues, and
problems that have been covered thus far. Once you have investigated the major themes, issues,
and problems, think critically about the items you have identified. Is there enough information
to write an analytical essay or is what you have identified more likely to appear as a short answer
ID? Second, study using the method most effective for your learning style. Many students have
had success by drafting out potential IDs and Essays or by using flash cards to memorize the
aspects of each concept they are studying. You are encouraged to email any questions or prep
material to your TAs for evaluation and comments (allow at least 24 hours for a response to any
email).

NOTE: The first exam will be held Wednesday, February 19, 4:00-6:00pm, in our regular
classroom. All students are expected to take the exam at this time. Students with testing
accommodations through the Student Ability Success Center should contact the instructor prior
to the exam to make the necessary arrangements.
