Abstract

The prime basis of the Smart Crowd Analyzer will be Artificial Intelligence (A.I), which will be
used in developing an algorithm to count and monitor multiple people via the analysis of their
physical features, in order to achieve certain goals (which will be described later). This project
holds on prior research, coupled with the addition of embedded features comprising group
counting, age, height, gender determination, as well as emotion detection. With the aid of these
slick functionalities, owners will be able to effectively survey the influx of the public at places,
say shopping centres, allowing them to keep track of how these places are doing in terms of
attracting the public and what amendments do they need to make in order for a larger influx. In
turn, this can significantly improve the revenue statistics of various companies.

We will follow the desired methodology by capturing images with the use of a PiCamera, and
then passing them through a series of openCV algorithms, detecting different features by utilizing
benchmarks such as the FERET benchmark (for gender detection), along with the Karolinska
Directed Emotional Faces (KDEF) dataset (emotion inspection). As a result, a report of the people
at an arbitrary time, will be generated. The quantity of people can also be determined on a
monthly or an annual scale. For this project to fully function, it will require standard cameras (for
wireless sensing-video purpose in a real time system), a PiCamera (for age detection); a
Raspberry Pi 4 module (for interpreting the camera input); a typical HDMI LCD (which will
obviously display the output of the camera); a power supply; a NVIDIA TITAN V graphics card,
and a Jetson Nano developer kit (to run multiple neural networks in parallel with image
classification, object detection, segmentation etc.). The crowd analyzer is based on latest research
using advanced tools (as mentioned above). An amount of 20,000 rupees should be stipulated so
that the required software and hardware can be purchased. Not to mention, appropriate research
can be done efficiently.

As a group of 4 students, presently studying in the Electrical Engineering department of

University of Engineering & Technology, Lahore, we are determined to achieve the
aforementioned objectives, and undoubtedly, desperate for adequate funding to increase the
probability of the completion of the proposed project.
