L6 Project: Part 1

Student Handout

Begin: Class 2
Final products:
1) written report
2) presentation + Q&A

Written Report

The written report should be typed in class, and should be at least a page in length, (single-
spaced, will have chosen a community to which you belong, and in the report you should
briefly include four main parts:
1) a brief explanation of the community: (what it is, who is in it, why it’s important to
you, what makes it special or unique, if it has a large or small presence in Barranquilla/is it
unique to Barranquilla or is it a global community, etc.)
2) the strengths/pros of this community and/or being in this community (in terms of
the unit topics in the book: diversity inclusion, technology, leadership, environment)
3) the weaknesses/cons of this community and/or being in this community (in terms
of the unit topics in the book: diversity inclusion, technology, leadership, environment)
4) what you predict is the future of this community based on its strengths/pros and
weaknesses/cons.
This information can be divided into four main paragraphs to target SLO 6, but doesn’t have
to be. It will be up to your teacher if you may or may not have the option of brainstorming
with other students, but reports must be done individually and must be your own work.
12 pt. font, conventional margins and spacing if typed) containing multiple paragraphs.

NOTE: You will be sharing this information with the class later on, so you should only select
a community that you feel comfortable talking about and identifying as being a part of.

Sources
Before writing your report, you should choose a minimum of three (3) sources to summarize
and synthesize (at least one [1] spoken and one [1] written) and draw information from for
your report. These sources do not have to be academic in nature, but must be in English.
You should reference your sources in your report, however informally is fine. The point of this
is not necessarily to practice researching and citing, though it would be a nice preview for
later levels, but rather to work on SLOs related to reading/listening to multiple written and/or
spoken texts to compare, contrast, and synthesize information.

SLOs targeted: 1, 2, 6
Due: Class 6

Presentation + Q&A
You will give a brief, informal presentation based off of your report. As the presentation is so
informal, it should be 2-3 minutes length, and cover describing your community, plus the
strengths/pros, weaknesses/cons, and the future you predict for your community. These
presentations should not be lengthy or formal, just thorough.

As students are taking their turn to give their presentation, the rest of the class should be
listening respectfully and choosing a minimum of three (3) presentations that are not their
own to ask a question about. Your teacher will instruct you as to how you should record and
submit your questions.

Scoring:
You must give your presentation, which includes all four parts (info, pros, cons, and future of
community) within the time requirement and also ask a question on a minimum of three
classmates’ presentations to be eligible to receive full credit.
