Abstract

Analysis on the Speech of President Donald Trump

In the 45th U.S. Presidential Election of 2016, the election of President Donald Trump startled the whole world
because no one really predicted his victory in the election. One of the major factors of his success was the use
of language that was simple, but not analytic. In the past 18th and 19th century, the political leaders’ analytic
speech had great influences. With the inauguration of President Eisenhower who was a forthright, simple,
explicit, and great hero in the1950s, however, the general trend started changing. Also, the analytic speaking
method was decreased in Australia, the UK, and Canada except for the United States while the simple, but
confident tone and speaking method became an important indicator of leadership in the whole world. The verbal
expression and linguistic method as a true leader are such important media for persuading the counterpart.
Eventually, the means for a politician to exercise his/her influence to people is language, and certainly, his
language has obtained many people’s favor. A world-famous British author and journalist, George Orwell
emphasized, “The elegant and difficult speech is not needed to politicians. Such easy words should be used for
verbal abuse.”. The unique style of language, frank gesture, and confident look of President Donald Trump were
delivered as a powerful image to people. His policies were persuasive and easy enough to be understood by
everyone, which was led to his victory in the election. However, his speeches and delivery method aroused
controversy for various topics and issues. Nevertheless, it would be necessary to research his successful
speech that has contributed to his election of president by persuading the audiences. Thus, this study aims to
research the linguistic method in each situation based on analysis by various critics and experts, by selecting
the case of speech and press conference of President Trump. Therefore, the objective of this study is to
research the impact of influential speech by President Donald Trump who has been settled down as a powerful
figure in the history of the United State, on society.
