Grading Rubric for 690A: Finding Fellowships/Grants Funding Associated with your Research Area

Total grade for this assignment: 5% of final grade

Due Date: March 26th, 2020

Grading is subjective, but your document will be graded on the following elements.

Your assignment is to search and find at least five funding opportunities that apply to either you as an
individual fellow, or to your lab (could be applicable to your current PI or for your potential future independent
research group) as a research grant. You may search for opportunities in any way you wish, and I recommend
you use information from Lecture 13 as a good starting point.

The assignment is to describe the manner(s) in which you searched for funding opportunities, to discuss how
these particular funding opportunities are applicable to you and/or your lab, and how you or your lab might go
about applying for this funding. Please make your write up no longer than 1 page. Grading is subjective, but I
will be looking for the following elements:

10 points: Describe how you searched for and found these 5 funding opportunities

20 Points: Fitting the grant/fellowship opportunity into your personal scientific and professional goals – why is it
that these might be good to apply for?

5 Points: Is this particular opportunity a fellowship for you, or is it a grant to fund your lab?

10 Points: Are you eligible to apply for this funding now? Why or why not?

10 Points: Do these funding opportunities fit within the context of your current research? How or how not?

10 Points: What, specifically, must be submitted to apply for the funding?

5 points: What does the fellowship/grant cover – i.e. how much and how long is the award?

5 points: If you can find this information, what is the funding rate (chance of success) for each opportunity?

10 Points: Might you recommend these funding opportunities to others? why or why not?

15 points: Will you apply? Why or why not? If you will apply, give a brief outline of your strategy.

NOTE: Opportunities will be different for domestic and international students. If you are an international
student, make sure to research any and all opportunities offered from your country of citizenship also.
