ABSTRACT

Morbi was founded 300 years ago on the banks of the Macchu River as a princely state in Northern Gujarat. The last known ruler of the city before India’s
Independence was Lakdhir Singhji. The growth of the city which has a rich and diverse historic and cultural past can be traced alongside an interest in
European Technology that made a small and growing pottery work in the old city into an industrial hub for ceramic manufacturing today.

The biggest industrial growth took place over the last decade and was fuelled by an abundance in resources and land. Rapid industrialisation has resulted in
an increase in the production of hazardous waste which is now affecting the river, ecology and built environment of the city. There has been a degradation in
liveability as the residents are facing many problems in the community and around the life in the old town that is losing character, culture and regional
identity of its own, as today. Morbi is globally recognised as an industrial centre for ceramic production. In today’s scenario, people of Morbi got influenced
by its significant contribution of industries in the economy of the city.

When the city is moving towards an upgraded way of living, it becomes important to know one’s roots for distinctiveness and identity. Hence, the thesis tries
to trace back its cultural and spatial identity in the inner city precinct and emphasizing its importance as a key ideology for the growth of the city. How does
an architect acknowledge and responds to cultural needs with keeping in mind the present aspect of the industry at an urban level? And what influence can
an architectural intervention bring back to its core and strengthen its foundation of the thriving city?

The project aims to explore by rejuvenating and reviving the sense of art form for the diverse community. Hence, it can identify the potentials of creating a
dialogue between the diverse community and profession through spatial developments.

Key words: - Morbi, industrial hub, degradation, identity, culture, growth, rejuvenating and reviving.
