Major Argument

In the year 1889, the Meiji took a stand and implemented the use of a constitution to its

government. The constitution was put in place to elevate Japans power to become a strong nation

and also to become a wealthier nation to the rank of the Western superpowers. The Meiji

Constitution was especially borrowed from the German states. The constitution empowered the

emperor with full sovereignty, he commanded the military, made peace and declared war, and

dissolved the lower house of the parliament when elections were necessary.

Sub Argument

In 1889, the Japanese Constitution was declared and various liberties and rights of the people,

beginning with the right to political participation, were recognized. A year later in 1890, a

national assembly, the bicameral Diet, was assembled and the constitutional government was

formed.

Conclusion

In conclusion, the Meiji era took a turn by implementing the western constitution which in turn

changed and shaped their political state.
