R.C. WATER STRUCTURES

____________________________________________________________________________

1- A rectangular elevated tank of dimensions 5.5m x 4.5m and the wall height 3.5m. Calculate
the load distribution, BMD, and NFD in both the vertical and horizontal directions for the
following case:
a) Tank walls are free
b) Tank walls are simply supported by a horizontal beam at the top of the tank
c) Tank is covered with a stiff roof.

2-Design and give detailed structural drawings for the reinforcement details for the tank in
Question 1 in both the vertical and horizontal directions when a top horizontal beam exists.

3-Design and give detailed structural drawings for the connection between the wall and floor for
the tank shown in Figure 1 in the following two cases:
a) Tank is resting on clay soil of bearing capacity 1.2 kg/cm2
b) Tank is resting on stiff soil.

Figure 1

Note : Consider the tank is full and neglect external soil pressure.

4-Figure 2 shows a covered underground water tank of top radius 3 m and bottom 4 m and
height 5 m. The concrete thickness of the walls, roof and floor is 0.20m. The ground water
table can rise up to the ground surface. It is required to calculate the following:
1. Check the safety of the tank against uplift and if it is unsafe determine the maximum
GWT height "h" at which the uplift is safe. (Use appropriate safety factors in each case).
2. Determine the GWT height "h" at which the weight of the tank when empty is not felt by
the soil.
Cone Volume = π r 2h / 3 Cone surface Area = π r h2 + r 2
gc = 25 kN/m 3
gsat = 19 kN/m3 g sub = 9 kN/m3
Hints:
- Weight of the soil above the tank should be considered in the uplift safety check.
- Make sure the correct soil density is used (saturated or submerged).

5- A covered rectangular underground tank of dimensions 5mx5m and height 6m is shown in

figure 3-a. The concrete thickness is 0.25 m for all walls, floor, and roof.

Figure 3- a Figure 3- b

a-What is the maximum value of h at which the uplift in the tank is safe when the tank is empty
b- Assuming that h=6 (Figure 3-b), check the uplift safety. If the uplift is unsafe what is the
minimum number of tension piles of capacity 70 kN that should be used?
c- Calculate the net soil pressure on floor in both cases when the tank is empty and when the
tank is full, for the case of h=6m assuming that tension piles are being used.
Notes:
- γs = 1.9 t/m3 γsubmerged = 9 kN/m3 Ka = 1/3 Allowable net soil stress is 150 KN/m2

6- Design and give detailed structural drawings for the tank in Question 5, for the case of GWT
level 3.5m below ground surface (h=2.5m Figure 3-a),

7- Design & give detailed structural drawings for a circular elevated uncovered water tank of
4.00 m diameter and 5.0 m wall height.
