Moment Distribution

Method
𝐴𝑙𝑠𝑜 𝑘𝑛𝑜𝑤𝑛 𝑎𝑠 𝐷𝑖𝑠𝑝𝑙𝑎𝑐𝑒𝑚𝑒𝑛𝑡 𝑀𝑒𝑡ℎ𝑜𝑑

Moment equilibrium equations are solved iteratively by successively

considering the moment equilibrium at one joint at a time, while the
remaining joints of the structure are assumed to be restrained
against displacement.

Actual Assembly Assembly O Assembly R

Assembly R and Q:
In actual assembly: Since linear elastic deformation
occurs, the force R in assembly R
develops moments in the frame
that are proportional to those
developed in Q.
In General:

Assembly Q
In Summary

Assembly O
1. Get each internal and support moments at Assembly O
2. Get R developed at introduced lateral support
Assembly R
1. Actual deflection as in Actual Assembly will be caused
by an R developed at the introduced support in
Assembly O but applied on the opposite direction
Assembly Q
1. Assume arbitrary FEM that would cause an arbitrary
deflection with assembly similar to Assembly R.
2. Get support and internal moments caused by the
arbitrary deflection
3. Get force Q via statics.
4. Determine Ratio R/Q.
Assembly A
1. Get actual moments at each support and connection
using the formula above.
