1. Why can petroleum be called rock oil ?

R. because petro comes from the Greek word for rock and oleum from the Greek word for oil

2. What is a fossil ? why are petroleum , coal ,and natural gas called fossil fuels ?
R. fossils are the traces or remains of plants or animal life that existed in previous geological
ages
Because they were created from tiny plants and animals that live millions of years ago
3. What is crude oil ? How useful is it in this form ?
R. crude oil is a liquid found under ground and it is not commercially usable in this form

R. the distillation is a process of heating a mixture to separate lighter substances from heavier
ones.
The distillation turns oil into commercial products.

R. the gasoline was used as a energy in automobiles
The kerosene was used as a source of heat and light

R. Because we know that the fuel most often used is gasoline a petroleum product.

9. Why is a by- product ? Give an example from the petroleum industry . Can you also give an
example from souse other industry?
R. It is a secondary product obtained in the process of making something else
As an example we can talk about gasoline that was a by product in the distillation of
petroleum to make kerosene.

10. What are petrochemicals ? what are they used to make ?


R. The petro chemicals are chemicals derived from petroleum .
They are used to make synthetic rubber, plastics and other substances.
