AVOIDING WARS IN ANARCHIC

WORLD

In the minds of the realist thinkers like Thucydides, Machiavelli, and Thomas Hobbes world
of politics the states were defined as the supreme power and the consideration of
individuals is not given importance. The state was not bounded by laws and was not
answerable to anybody. If the state wants to go into war then the people had to give their
full cooperation for a sense of safety.

From the start of human history wars have been necessary evil in most parts. War for
power, land and resources. States gets into war when they fear the other is getting
stronger. Thucydides thus quoted “human nature can’t change”. Fear and jealously could be
the leading causes of wars in an anarchic world thus making it almost impossible to avoid
wars. Even in modern times one state goes in conflict with other to make sure they have a
supreme power. Motto of an anarchic world has always been “getting the absolute power”

Fast forward to the present times new ideas have helped in avoiding wars in the anarchic
world. Balance of power between nations, making of boundaries, laws and international
cooperation has helped in avoiding wars yet time to time nations have went into wars thus
making it almost impossible to avoid wars .Maybe not avoidable but such measures has
been a way of prevention of wars.
