He gathered in the line and looked around for the basket of fish. It had been swept away. He
glanced downstream; there was the basket of beautiful mullet caught in a hollow at the foot
of a large rock. The water had risen dangerously high but he was determined not to lose the
fish. He must go after it as quickly as possible. Half-wading, half-swimming, he reached the
rock and fumbled at the basket; which had entangled itself among the brambles.
He pulled and tugged while the water assaulted his body, by the time the basket was free he
was panting. He knew he was too exhausted to swim the river with rod and basket so he
thought he would climb to the top of the rock and rest a while. There he saw Noreen.
