CRUSHING VALUE OF AGGREGATE

Aggregate crushing value gives a relative measure of the resistance of an aggregate to

crushing under gradually applied compressive load. Rate of loading 40 tons within 10 minutes.
Aggregate crushing value = (B / A) X 100
Where B = Wt. of fraction passing the appropriate sieve (2.36 mm is sieve)
A= Wt. of surface dry sample

Object: To find Crushing value of aggregate.

References: - Specification as per IS: 383

Method of test IS: 2386 (Part-iv )

Apparatus:-
Cylindrical measure and plunger, Compression testing machine, IS Sieves of sizes –
12.5mm, 10mm and 2.36mm.

Sampling Procedure:-
1. Coarse aggregate passing 12.5-mm sieve & retained on 10 mm sieve is taken.

2. The sample is oven dried for 4 hours at 100 to 110 °c.

Procedure:-
1. Aggregates passing through 12.5mm and retained on 10mm IS Sieve are oven-dried at a
temperature of 100 to 110oC for 3 to 4hrs.
2. The cylinder of the apparatus is filled in 3 layers, each layer tamped with 25 strokes of a
tamping rod.
3. The weight of aggregates is measured (Weight ‘w’).
4. The surface of the aggregates is then leveled and the plunger inserted. The apparatus is
then placed in the compression testing machine and loaded at a uniform rate so as to achieve 40
ton load in 10 minutes. After this, the load is released.
5. The sample is then sieved through a 2.36mm IS Sieve and the fraction passing through
the sieve is weighed (Weight ‘w1’).
6. Two tests should be conducted.

Observations &calculations:-

Aggregate Crushing value :- (w1/w)*100

Acceptance Criteria:-

Crushing value shall not be more than 30 % for wearing surfaces& shall not be more than
45 % for non-wearing surfaces.
