MODERNISM

- Is distinguished from modern philosophy and is connected to certain movements and changes in
arts and literature around the end of the 19th century. Particularly it happened at the years after the
WW1.

- The Modernist impulse is fueled in various literatures by industrialization and urbanization and
by the search for an authentic response to a much-changed world.

- There are some prewar works and artist such as Henry James, Joseph Conrad that is already
considered modernist. However, Modernism as a literary movement is associated during the time after
the World War 1.

- the Modernist story was often more of a stream of consciousness. Irony, satire, and
comparisons were often employed to point out society's ills.

WHAT LED TO MODERNISM?

Modernism was shaped by the development of modern industrialized societies, rapid growth of cities,
new technology and the horrifying events of both World Wars (but specifically World War I) made many
people question the future of humanity: What was becoming of the world?Modernist literature came
into its own due to increasing industrialization and globalization.
