NYPD Hate Crimes unit investigates

Williamsburg incident
The NYPD Hate Crime Task Force is actively investigating anti-Sematic
vandalism in Williamsburg.

According to police information provided to UJO, a number of Mezuzahs

(doorpost Scriptures) at 580 Wythe Ave were defaced with marker, and 3
apartment doors and an elevator door were also defaced with graffiti.

"We are working on the case currently," said a Task Force officer.

HEAP is HERE
Open enrollment for Home Energy Assistance Program

The 2020-2021 Home Energy Assistance Program (“Heap”) is now open and
accepting applications.

As you know, HEAP is a benefit that helps low- and fixed-income New Yorkers
pay the cost of heating their homes during the winter months. The benefit can
be used towards a resident’s boiler, furnace, electric, natural gas, oil, propane,
wood/wood pellets, kerosene and/or corn oil heating bill.

To apply, please contact 212-331-3126. Applications will soon be available on

ACCESS HRA* to download and mail back to HRA. *Please note, the HEAP
application cannot be submitted through ACCESS HRA. More information can
be found here.

While there is no need to come into an HRA Center to apply for HEAP, starting
in November, HRA will have representatives providing HEAP application
assistance to potential clients in job centers and in community sites. These
representatives will provide assistance with completing applications and will
forward to the HEAP central office for processing. Individuals applying for
benefits can also drop off applications and documents at these locations.

UJO will soon announce more details about HEAP assistance at our office.

We urge all low- and fixed-income consumers to apply, because the receipt of
HEAP will result in the customer being automatically enrolled into their utility

Did you get a “Shut-Off Notice”?

 
Moratorium against shutoff extended – but notice may help with HEAP
 
This Tuesday, Nov. 3rd, Governor Cuomo extended the COVID-19 State of
Emergency until December, as seen in attached letter. This means that the
statewide moratoria for all gas, electric, water and telephone utility shutoffs will
continue uninterrupted for another thirty days.

However, for double protection, people getting those letters should also call in
their utility, to self-certify that they suffered income loss due to covid, to avoid
shutoff.

The utility companies explain further, that shut-off warning letters allows the
recipients to become eligible for HEAP.  Such notices should not result in
termination until the moratorium ends.

Importantly, HEAP benefits will result in the customer being automatically

enrolled into their utility company’s low-income discount program, which results
in a monthly deduction on their energy bill.

Remember, though, that the moratorium does NOT apply to Internet or cable
phone service etc. If you have lost Internet or cable phone, or have received a
shutoff notice, call your provider and ask them to restore service so you can
work out an affordable payment agreement.
