CHAPTER I

The Problem

I. Introduction

Philippines is a developing country exerting tremendous efforts to progress

amidst facing major problems that arises nowadays. As such, there is a rise in

developmental projects in the country. As such, roads are being built since they serve

a vital purpose in our everyday life. It allows us to traverse to places in order to

execute our goals such as delivering goods from places at a given time.

Road has become one of the most important infrastructure equipment worldwide.

As time pass by, the development of highway system continues to evolve and

countries are making progress. The need for efficient road networks and safety is very

important. Efforts regarding on the ease and safety of the road users are being done.

We are facing an increase in vehicle occupancy and the problem with the loading of

the traffic volume. Roads are widened and developed for facilitating vehicles way to

avoid heavy traffic. This is one of the primary solution for our major problem.

In the present, road widening is being implemented if there is a need for it. It

increases the width of the path and can accommodate more vehicles which in turn

gives more space and traffic will not congest the highways. It also improves traffic

safety which lessen car accidents , car crashes and the like,
Investment in infrastructure and innovation are crucial drivers of economic growth

and development. With over half the world population now living in cities , mass

transport and renewable energy are becoming ever more important, as are the growth

of new industries and information and communication technologies.

Develop quality, reliable, sustainable and resilient infrastructure, including regional

and transborder infrastructure, to support economic development and human well-

being, with a focus on affordable and equitable access for all.

Road safety targets have been included in the final text of the new Sustainable

Development Goals adopted by UN member states in New York.

A specific stand-alone target in the Health Goal to reduce road traffic fatalities by

50% by 2020 and a target on sustainable urban transport in the Cities Goal have been

approved, in a landmark achievement for the global road safety community. For the

FIA foundation it marks a successful culmination to more than three years of

advocacy and coordination of a campaign, in partnership with a wide coalition , to

secure inclusion of road safety in the global development agenda for the first time.

FIA foundations staffers participated in the final to-week session of intergovernmental

negotiations as they have done every relevant session for the past 18 months, talking

to government nations and UN agencies to ensure that the targets retained support.

The SDGs will guide all global development effort over the next 15 years , designed

to ‘stimulate action in areas of critical importance for humanity and the planet’.

By 2020, halve the number of global deaths and injuries from road traffic accidents

which ensures healthy lives and promote well-being for all at all ages.

By 2030, provide access to safe, affordable, accessible and sustainable transport

systems for all improving road safety, notably by expanding public transportation,

with special attention to the needs of those in vulnerable situations, women,

children, persons with disabilities and older persons. Thus, make cities and human

settlements inclusive, safe , resilient and sustainable. o
