ASSIGNMENT 4
 What is the last place you went to or the last product you purchased that claimed to
be “authentic?” What are the challenges of defending the authenticity of this place
or product while refuting the authenticity of other similar places or products?
The last product I bought that claimed to be “authentic” is batik dress. I
bought with my mom it by online shop. Batik is one of the local product of Indonesia
and very famous. But in the other hand, some countries claimed batik as their product
or culture. My challenges to defend the authenticity of this product actually very
diverse. Globalization is one of the challenges. In this era, many culture from the other
countries come into Indonesia and spread out. Of course, a lot of people in Indonesia
accept this external culture and some of those develop and also use it in the real life.
This situation indirectly make local culture in Indonesia fade away and being forgotten.
Other than that, there is a country claims that batik is the original culture from their
county. Actually batik has many pattern and different in each region. It is better if other
country that claim Batik as their culture didn’t use the word of ‘Batik’ anymore because
this word is an Indonesian creation. We as the young generation need to preserve our
culture by consume and use it. We can also reproduce to keep it authentic and be
characteristic of Indonesia.

 Think about your local community (your college campus, your neighborhood, your
town). Determine how your local community takes one aspect of popular culture
and makes it your own.
I think my city and also my neighborhood in Malang. My local community
here takes on aspect of popular culture by using social media. In this era, many
information spread out very quickly in the social media. With the development of
information technology, the development of the internet develop very fast. This make
social media also can get any information faster. The local community in my region
exchange information by social media. This information like popular culture which is
trending. They imitate the popular culture and pass it into neighbors or other local
residents. Some people also make a local product inspired by popular culture. This can
be shirt, cafe, the cup for drink, and many more. Sometimes they also make some event
based on popular culture.

 Focus on the cultural landscape of your college campus. Thing about the concept of
placelessness. Determine whether your campus is a “placeless place” or if the
cultural landscape of your college reflects the unique identity of the place. Imagine
you are hired to build a new student union on your campus. How could you design
the building to reflect the uniqueness of your college?
In my opinion, I think the cultural landscape of my college has already reflects
the unique identity of the place but it’s not good enough. Not all the building in my
college reflects the unique identity. Only several building does, for example Balairung.
If I already success to build new student union in my campus, I will build some student
union which aims to preserve the college environtment and pay attention to culture. The
project like design the building to reflect the uniqueness of the college. The design that
will build is like build several buildings in each faculty that reflect the Yogyakarta
cultures. Besides that, considering that Gadjah Mada University consist many student
from various regions with various cultures too, as well, it would be better if in every
corner of the campus there is an ornament or building that symbolized the culture of
various regions in Indonesia. At the main gate, there will be gorgeous if we put some
building resemble like temple in Yogyakarta. This will be reflect the uniqueness of our
college, Gadjah Mada University.
