Instructions: Divide the formula into a left side and a right side. Numeric subscripts are
included with the elemental symbol to its left.
The left side will be one of 3 scenarios
a. One capital letter on left (may include subscript)
b. One capital letter and one lower-casecase letter (may include subscript)
c. A group of elements that looks like NH4

Purpose: To evaluate a name when hydrogen appears within a formula but not as a
left side element (except for water H2O).
Instructions: Memorize that hydrogen is a left side element to only 7 core family
elements. For the other three (carbon, nitrogen, oxygen), hydrogen appears in the
formula and the common name for these 4 formula is used (CH4-methane,
methane,
NH3-ammonia, H2O-water,
water, H2O2-hydrogen peroxide).

Memorize that when hydrogen is used as a right side element alone, the right side
