Everything has a beginning
Although started earlier,
Chinatown is considered to
have been consolidated
around 1870. Chinese came to
the inner cities to escape
persecution and mob threats.

The styles of the sprawl
The main building type in
Chinatown is the 19th century
tenement. They are often
square and relatively
windowless. In the warm
months residents sleep on the
fire escapes and flat roofs.

Despite the name 'Chinatown'
The neighborhood is also
home to Dominicans, Puerto
Ricans, Burmese, Vietnamese,
Filipinos, and others. However,
the majority are Chinese,
constituting around 100,000
residents, and making it the
largest collection of Chinese in
the Western Hemisphere.
FAMOUS FOR
ITS FOODS
From restaurants to street
markets
Chinatown is the home of
many famous dishes, including
Chow Mein, Chop Suey,
Shanghai Soup Dumplings,
and Egg Foo Young. Chinese
food, both American and
ethnic, can be found in
Chinatown along with street
markets selling fresh fish,
fruits, and hand-made sweets.

Many visitors to Times Square

travel to Chinatown for meals.
Many of the immigrants that
worked as manual laborers in
the businesses and newsstands
were also Chinese. It is also a
neighbor of the square,
bordered by Broadway on its
West.
