We see that Harriet receives a letter from Mr.

Martin and is very happy and excited on receiving marin’s

proposal bcz she likes him and wants to accept the proposal but when she shows the letter to Emma,
Emma although likes the letter, but only bcz of having personal disliking for martin, emma starts planting
some doubts in Harriets mind and indirectly brainwashes harriet. And weak unreasoning Harriet
eventually rejects Martin’s proposal. So we see how Emma doesn’t let harriet taking her own decision
that make her happy but rather she imposes her decisions on her friend. And it reveals the level of
control Emma has gained over the weak Harriet and how shes manipulating the weak, unreasoning
harriet according to her own will.

Also the lines said by Emma that "It would have grieved me to lose your acquaintance, which must have
been the consequence of your marrying Mr. Martin." Reveals how conditional Emma’s friendship is that
it can remain only as long as hariet continue to obey Emma’s decisions withoit questioning

unquestionably.
