Assessment

Summative Test 3.
Discuss thoroughly.
1. Describe the relationships between wave characteristics including shape, wavelength,
period, amplitude, steepness, and velocities.
Ans: Shape – the shape of the wave is directly related to how strong is the energy (which is the
wind) traveling to a certain point
Wavelength – the distance between two successive crest or trough.
Period – the time for a single wavelength to pass on a given point.
Amplitude – the distance between sea level and the crest
Steepness – the ratio between the wave height to wavelength
Velocities – the distance traveled (which is the wavelength) in a given interval of time
(which is the period).
2. Explain how wind-generated waves, swell, and rouge waves are formed.
Ans: Wind-generated waves are formed by the simplest friction between wind and surface
water.
Swells are formed by the traveling of wind caused by the storm. It usually travels across
long distance.
Rogue waves are formed when several normal waves meet each other at the same place
and at the same time, forming a larger wave that is twice or thrice the significant wave
height of that particular area.
