Capel Bond (1730-1790) Concerto No. 6 in Bb for Bassoon, String Orchestra and Continuo Edited and arranged by Gerald Finzi Reduction for Bassoon and Piano and the Bassoon part edited by William Waterhouse Boosey .& Hawkes Music Publishers Limited London « Paris » Bonn + Johannesburg » Sydney - Toronto - New York Capel Bond is yet another example of the English 18th century composer whose work and reputation became completely submerged during the subsequent century. Up till now only the date of his death has been known, but recent research has shown that he was born in 1730, of Gloucestershire parents, and baptized at St. Mary de Lode, Gloucester, on 14th’ December of that year. He was apprenticed in 1742 to Martin Smith, the organist of Gloucester Cathedral, and was appointed organist of St. Michael’s, Coventry, in 1749, and organist of Holy Trinity, Coventry in 1752, holding both offices until his death, on 14th February 1790, aged filty-nine. He was buried at Binley, near Coventry, where his tombstone describes him as an eminent musician and an indulgent husband, He was the conductor of the first Birming- ham Festival, 1768, and his main published works wefe ‘Six Concertos in Seven Parts’, 1766, and ‘Six Anthems in Score’, 1769. It is from the former work that the present Concerto is taken. Like so many of his contemporaries, although not in himself a great figure, he yet produced individual work which could bear comparison with the best of his time. Concertos for solo bassoon and strings are rare enough at all times, and it would be hard to say where, in the whole repertory, a more charming example can be found, or how bassoonists could have lost sight of it for some century and a half. Bowing, expression marks, and some dynamics, are editorial and can be modified or omitted as desired. Most English composers born after 1720 became progressively more generous with their dynamics than were their immediate predecessors. Bond is no exception and such dynamics as appear in the original have been retained in brackets. The original tempo directions are given and any editorial ones are included in italics. Appoggiaturas have been written out in the parts only. A continuo part has been included which aims at being no more than a ‘basic’ one, and, for the benefit of any experienced continuo players who may prefer a more elaborate realization, the original figuring has been included. The omission of continuo parts in works for which they are intended is to be regretted. Not only does the texture frequently remain incomplete without them, but an important element of contrast and variety is lost. However, in case of necessity, when no keyboard is available, this concerto can be played without one. . I am indebted to Mr William Waterhouse for making the pianoforte reduction and for editing the solo bassoon part. The latter has been left in its original version in the piano score and the full seore.
