Foundation for A COURSE IN MIRACLES®

In our early years of studying A Course in Miracles, as well as teaching and applying its principles in our
respective professions of psychotherapy, and teaching and school administration, it seemed evident that this was
not the simplest of thought systems to understand. This was so not only in the intellectual grasp of its teachings,
but, perhaps even more important, in the application of these teachings to our personal lives. Thus, it appeared to
us from the beginning that the Course lent itself to teaching, parallel to the ongoing teachings of the Holy Spirit
in the daily opportunities within our relationships that the manual discusses in its early pages. We thus began our
Foundation in 1983. The following is adapted from our Statement of Purpose:
To foster spiritual development through the study and practice of A COURSE IN MIRACLES, a set of three books
scribed from Jesus that teach that the way to remember God is by undoing guilt through forgiving others. The
Foundation has as its specific aims to teach the Course, helping those interested to integrate the Course’s princi-
ples into their personal lives, that they may better realize their true identity, shared with all people, as children of
God; to teach those who wish to teach A COURSE IN MIRACLES to others; to teach the Course’s reinterpretation of
traditional Christian principles such as sin, suffering, forgiveness, Atonement, and the meaning of the Crucifixion;
to further understanding of A COURSE IN MIRACLES by means of educational programs, seminars, and publications.

TAKING THE EGO LIGHTLY: Protecting Our Projections

This 2013 seminar discusses the dismantling of the ego’s serious thought system of sin, guilt, and
fear. This is held in place by our projecting a serious world—personally and collectively—its pur-
pose being to rivet our attention on the body. In this way we are distracted from the decision-making
mind that is the source of the problem and the answer. But the ego is easily undone when we pay
attention to the gentle little man (symbol for Jesus) just in back of us, always reminding us to laugh
at his joke: “It is a joke to think that time can come to circumvent eternity… .” His loving presence
encourages us to meet the ego’s seriousness—in all its forms—with a gentle giggle, tender tickle,
and sweet smile.

WHEN 2 + 2 = 5
Reflecting Love in a Loveless World
The musings of Dostoevsky’s famed underground man set the stage for the discussion in this book.
The unquestioned 2 + 2 = 4 equation symbolizes the ego’s plan to bind us to its laws. When the hope-
lessness and sterility of the world’s laws dawn, we begin to realize that 2 + 2 = 5, which symbolizes
our turning within for answers, accepting that we are “under no laws but God’s,” as Lesson 76 tells us.
This leads us to the undoing of our fundamental mistake of believing that 1 + 1 = 2, which symbolizes
the reality of separation and defends against the only true equation: 1 + 1 = 1. Thus we accept the love
of Jesus as our guide for living within the world, while not allowing it any power over our inner peace.

HEALING THE UNHEALED MIND

The central focus of this book is the theme of body and mind, which can be restated as the theme
of form and content. We recognize the ego’s ingenuity in having us focus on the external symptoms
of sickness, their amelioration then seen as healing. True healing comes only when we let the true
Healer return our attention to the mind’s symptom of guilt. Then are our unhealed minds cleansed of
the erroneous belief in guilt’s reality, freeing us to become healed healers. Our recognizing that sick-
ness and healing are only of the mind is one of the Course’s major purposes, for it is the basis of for-
giveness. Understanding this process is a significant part of the healing journey we take with Jesus.

ENDING OUR ESCAPE FROM LOVE

From Dissociation to Acceptance of A Course in Miracles
This book is presented as a companion to my earlier book, Ending Our Resistance to Love. Resis-
tance is at the very heart of students’ difficulties with the Course, as it is the source of what appear to
be the failures of even its most faithful adherents to learn and practice the principles of forgiveness.
The gentle path to Atonement begins with recognizing the fear of it, and then proceeds with looking
without judgment at the defenses (resistance) against our choosing to return home. Thus do the walls
of dissociation dissolve, and A Course in Miracles allowed to be the means for our accepting the
Correction that heralds our awakening from the ego’s dream and attaining the End we seek.

THE STAGES OF OUR SPIRITUAL JOURNEY

At the same time that A Course in Miracles emphasizes the non-dualistic nature of reality, which
is infinite and eternal, we are also told that our journey is a process occurring over time. Thus we do
not go directly from illusion to truth, but take the small steps that will lead us to our goal. Using
Friedrich Nietzsche's parable of the camel, the lion, and the child, this book unfolds the process of
spiritual development woven into the teachings of the Course. The process is essentially a journey
that proceeds in and through the world and on to spiritual maturity, this final stage marked by the
ease of being in the world but not of it, seeing everything now through the eyes of forgiveness.

THE ARCH OF FORGIVENESS

The subject of this book drew its inspiration from the image of an arch immortalized by D.H.
Lawrence in his novel The Rainbow. As the child in the story was freed to live her life framed by the
pillars of love and strength represented by her parents, so Jesus asks us to view our daily lives as
framed between the pillars of forgiveness, allowing its quiet strength and gentle protection to nourish
our experience and sustain our learning. We thus grow in our recognition of the contrast between life
under the arch of his love and life outside it. The discussion includes guiding students in resolving
their specific dilemmas and conflicts from the perspective of Jesus’ arch of forgiveness.

FROM FUTILITY TO HAPPINESS

Sisyphus as Everyman
In Greek mythology, Sisyphus was condemned by the gods to a life of pushing a rock up a moun-
tain only to have it fall back down to the bottom, there to begin his labors again. His life of futility
mirrors our life in the body and the hopelessness of pursuing meaning in the world. The first part of
this book addresses this view as presented in A Course in Miracles. The second part discusses the
transition from futility to happiness in the context of the Course’s offering of another way of looking
at our seeming fate. Through changing our inner teacher from the ego to Jesus, our meaningless lives
metamorphose into meaningful classrooms that lead us to the Heaven we never truly left.

PARENTS AND CHILDREN

Our Most Difficult Classroom
The theme developed in this book is what it means to be a right-minded parent and a right-minded
child. The former role involves being faithful to the changing function of parent, at the same time
respecting the child’s decision-making mind to choose its life experiences, and whether to perceive
them through the eyes of the ego or the Holy Spirit. Spiritual maturity is attained when we no longer
think of our parents as authorities—on the level of content—but as brother and sister walking with us
on the path that leads us home. Thus, both forms of this primary relationship can, if we so choose,
exemplify Jesus’ message of forgiveness: not seeing another’s interests as separate from our own.

FORM VERSUS CONTENT: Sex and Money

In this edited transcription of a workshop, the almost universal preoccupation with sex and money
is explained in the context of the ego’s plan to root us in the mindless state of the body, thus keeping
us from returning to the decision-making part of our minds where we would see both the source and
the healing of the conditions that lead to these emotionally-laden issues. The discussion reveals how
sex and money are used by the ego to support its doctrine of separate interests—the principle of one
or the other—and then how the Holy Spirit can use these very same forms as a means of teaching us
that our interests are not separate, and that no one has to suffer or be sacrificed to have our needs met.

THE HEALING POWER OF KINDNESS

Volume Two: Forgiving Our Limitations
This second book on kindness centers on two statements of caution Jesus offers in A Course in
Miracles. Characteristic of his gentle guidance, he tells us not to be disturbed by the shadows sur-
rounding our “little willingness” to learn from him, and not to despair because of our limitations.
Seeking ways to overcome the upsetting imperfections in our bodies and the world nicely serves the
ego’s purpose of concealing the mind’s decision for guilt, substituting a limited self for the unlimited
Self of Christ. Identifying with the loving Presence of the Holy Spirit in our right minds, we under-
stand our self-defeating choice, allowing true correction. (Edited transcriptions of workshops.)

THE HEALING POWER OF KINDNESS

Volume One: Releasing Judgment
The idea for this book originated with a talk given at the end of a week-long class on sickness and
healing. The teaching staff was struck by the paradox of students spending a week discussing forgive-
ness and undoing separation, while also fervently practicing judgment and condemnation on each
other—directly opposite to the kind, gentle tone of Jesus’ message of undoing separation. It is our hope
that this discussion of the principles of sickness and healing and their misapplication helps to undo the
sources of unkindness, so that in all of our interactions we would reflect the Source of kindness.

ENDING OUR RESISTANCE TO LOVE

The term resistance appears infrequently in A Course in Miracles, yet it is the only concept that
can satisfactorily explain the paradox of students sincerely attempting to learn and live its principles
under the Holy Spirit’s guidance, while experiencing the ongoing frustration of not doing that. This
is the topic explored in this book, the focus of which is on the basis of resistance in the fear of love.
Freud’s valuable insights are discussed, along with Jesus’ role in helping us look without judgment
at our investment in maintaining the ego’s thought system—the miracle that resolves the paradox.

JOURNEY THROUGH THE TEXT OF A COURSE IN MIRACLES
As with the preceding books in this series on the books of A Course in Miracles, Jour-
ney through the Text of A COURSE IN MIRACLES originated with lectures (32) given by me
at the Foundation for A Course in Miracles. However, unlike the preceding books, this
book is not a line-by-line exegesis. Rather, the material of each of the thirty-one chap-
ters is arranged symphonically by theme, the selected passages chosen to illustrate
each theme. Moreover, I have added some material from each chapter, which time con-
straints prevented me from including in the original lectures.
This Journey, therefore, is a symphonic portrait of the thought system of A Course in
Miracles, and is meant to lead students through the text as one would be guided in lis-
tening to a great piece of music: its themes presented, and their development and their
relationship to the larger work pointed out. In effect, this book is a symphony about a
symphony, and readers are led non-linearly along their journey through the Course.
Journey through the Text of A COURSE IN MIRACLES thus completes the series on each
of the three books of A Course in Miracles (and the Preface). It is my hope and prayer
that it will be instrumental in facilitating a student's journey through the vast panorama
of wisdom and love that constitutes the Course's unique contribution to the spiritual
development of our species.

“WHAT IT SAYS”: From the Preface of A Course in Miracles • A Commentary

One year after A Course in Miracles was published, and in response to many requests, Helen
Schucman wrote an introduction to the Course material, which was called the Preface. The third of
this three-part Preface, “What It Says” was scribed by Helen by the same process of inner dictation
from Jesus as was the Course itself. It introduces, as would a musical overture, the major themes to
be discussed, thus providing a succinct overview of the spiritual path presented in the Course. This
book offers a line-by-line journey through this beautifully written document, in many ways a minor
masterpiece.

The purpose of the manual is to guide us in becoming teachers of God through demonstration.
This line-by-line presentation is organized around two major themes and their variations. The first
unifies the seemingly disparate questions posed in the manual: separate versus shared interests, the
core of the Course’s concept of forgiveness. The second, equally important, is the key to the practice
of the Course: asking the Holy Spirit for help.

companion to accompany students on their journey through the workbook, supplementing their expe-
rience, not substituting for the workbook as it was given to us. Its purpose is to help students better
understand the meaning of the lessons and their place in the curriculum of the Course. Most of all, the
purpose is to help students see the importance of applying the daily lessons to their everyday lives.

The characters of these tragedies—King Lear, Hamlet, Macbeth, and Othello—speak to all of us;
indeed they are all of us. As these commentaries reveal, their motivations and feelings are different
aspects of the thought system of specialness we all share, and had these characters chosen the path of

From The Lighthouse: An Anthology

To Look Upon Darkness Through Light Must Dispel It
In 1990, the Foundation for A COURSE IN MIRACLES began its official
newsletter, The Lighthouse. It evolved into a quarterly periodical
announcing classes and publications, and featuring articles written by us
(Kenneth and Gloria). We have thought for some time now, echoed in
the numerous requests of others, to have these articles available as a col-
lection, and thus are pleased to announce this compendium of writings
entitled From The Lighthouse. The articles cover a wide range of topics,
as we considered both the world of A Course in Miracles as well as the
world at large through the lens of the Course’s teachings on forgiveness.
When taken together, as they are in this compendium, these writings
provide a window into how we at the Foundation have seen A Course in
Miracles as a spiritual path, as well as our own development as a center
dedicated to preserving and teaching its principles. (Excerpted from the

THE HEIGHTS OF HAPPINESS
A Course in Miracles teaches that the only truth within the illusion is that we are decision-making
minds that have erred: we chose the wrong teacher. Therefore, the only way to attain the "heights of
happiness" is for us to return to our minds that chose against happiness by choosing against God, and
then change that decision. The process of ascending to the "heights of happiness" thus is the focus of
the discussion in this 2009 class.

FORGIVENESS: “A MANY-SPLENDORED THING”

A discussion in this 2011 class of some of Helen Schucman’s visions highlights the importance of
integrating the Course’s message of love’s all inclusiveness so that it is reflected in our daily experi-
ence. The love of Jesus within us then would not be just an abstract principle but would extend
through us as we recognize Christ’s innocence in everyone.

APPEARANCE VERSUS REALITY

In our everyday lives, the contrast between appearance and reality takes the form of distinguish-
ing between the ego’s illusion of attack and defense and Jesus’ truth of everything as an expression
of love or a call for it. Thus, in this 2009 class, the Course’s metaphysical foundation is the backdrop
for the discussion of forgiveness as the means of undoing the ego’s thought system of specialness by
our learning to correct the ego’s misperceptions.

THE DAWNING OF CONSCIOUSNESS: The End of Oneness

In this 2012 class, consciousness is presented not as a structure but as part of the process of going
from Oneness to duality and then from duality back to Oneness. Guided by our Teacher, we learn the
right-minded use of the symbols of consciousness to help ourselves and others get beyond con-
sciousness. We thus ultimately become the same symbol of the Love of God that Jesus is.

THE LOVING USE OF THE BODY

This presentation combines two 2013 seminars: “Bodies: ‘Senses without Sense’” and “The Christ
in You.” The focus is on the Course’s compromise approach to mind and body, whereby the body’s
needs and experiences are not denied, but are given the Holy Spirit’s purpose of leading us from illu-
sion to truth, paving the way to our awakening from the dream and realizing we are all one as Christ.

THE COURSE’S “PRIME DIRECTIVE”
Jesus' “prime directive” in A Course in Miracles is not to interfere with form, thus allowing us to
go through a process of internal development so that we would come to learn that our problems are
not in the world of bodies, but in how we are seeing the world of bodies. We then can choose Jesus as
our teacher, correcting our mistake of believing we separated from love, and thus become reflections
of Love

TAKING THE EGO LIGHTLY: Protecting Our Projections

This seminar discusses the dismantling of the ego’s serious thought system of sin, guilt, and
fear, held in place by our projecting a serious world, its purpose being to rivet our attention on the
body. The ego is easily undone when we pay attention to the gentle little man (symbol for Jesus)
just in back of us. His loving presence encourages us to meet the ego’s seriousness with a gentle
giggle, tender tickle, and sweet smile.

THE COMMUNITY OF LOVE

These classes, from the 2013 five-day Academy class, focus on the need for us as students of A
Course in Miracles to take its wealth for ourselves, and then share it with everyone we meet or even
think of. In this way, a community of love is established that welcomes all people into our little gar-
dens of love and forgiveness, the circle of Atonement that Jesus invites us all to join, and rest in God.

“NOT ONE DOES CHRIST FORGET”
The discussions in these two programs from 2012 reflect parallel themes, and thus are presented
as a set. The “kind in heart” are those who have chosen the teacher of peace in their minds. The sem-
inar is based on the end of Lesson 160, where Jesus exhorts his students to recognize that learning

“ACT YOUR PART WITH HONOR”

The great Stoic philosopher Epictetus, the Roman Emperor Marcus Aurelius, and A Course in
Miracles urge us to act with honor in all our relationships, regardless of how the world seems to be
treating us. We thus remember our true innocence and safety, shared with all people. This allows us
not to be tempted by the “evils” of the world, but to see beyond them to the call for love that is in

WATCHING WITH ANGELS
Built around the theme of Christmas, passages from A Course in Miracles, and Helen Schucman's
poetry, this 2012 seminar focuses on stillness and silence as the means of our being reborn as Christ,
our true Self. Watching with angels means looking non-judgmentally at the wrong mind with the lov-
ing thoughts of God supporting us. Letting go of the ego's “meager treasures” that filled our minds
with static allows us at last to be still and hear the angels' silent song of awakening.

THE SIGNIFICANCE OF A COURSE IN MIRACLES: A Freudian Vedanta

This lecture, held in Emeryville CA, centers on the two elements that compose A Course in Mira-
cles: its non-dualistic metaphysics and its sophisticated psychology. A major focus of the talk is on
the need to recognize our projections, returning them to our minds so we can choose again. This,
then, becomes the essence of forgiveness, which undoes the mind’s guilt so we may allow the Holy
Spirit’s forgiving love to extend through us to embrace everyone, without exception..

A COURSE IN MIRACLES AS A WORK OF ART

Hearing and Reading Its Message
This seminar emphasizes the importance of approaching A Course in Miracles as a whole, allow-
ing the brilliance of its structure—pedagogic and literary—to work within our hearts and minds. To
do otherwise prevents the Course’s true message of forgiveness and healing from entering our lives.
Jesus thus asks us to join with his course, rather than have it join with us in our dualistic awareness.

“THE UNEXAMINED LIFE IS NOT WORTH LIVING”

This five-day class focuses on a wide range of subjects, their underlying theme being “mind
searching” or “life examining,” echoing the famous words of Socrates. Such practice requires hon-
esty with ourselves to see the resistance to letting go of the attraction to the body and to the guilt that
sustains it. Kindness to ourselves and to others becomes the means of undoing this attraction, for as
it heals our relationships here, it heals the mind that believes it has separated from God.

FORGIVENESS NOW: “Those you do not forgive you fear”

This 2012 seminar focuses on the holy instant, wherein we decide to forgive our special love and
hate partners. Emphasis is placed on making the choice for Jesus and his principle of forgiveness -
right now. In that holy instant, the nonexistent past of guilt and sin fades into its own nothingness,
while the fearful though unreal future ceases to occupy our attention. Freed from the illusory chains
of time, we are able to make the only sane choice available to us in this insane world–right now!

HEALING: “The Patient Must Minister to Himself”
This 2012 workshop focuses on the necessity of bringing to the Holy Spirit our ego thoughts so
that His healing light can dissolve the darkness of our mind's guilt. Since we are almost totally iden-
tified with the mindless body, indirect learning is needed wherein we focus on the worldly experi-
ences of our special relationships as the means of leading us back to the decision-making mind so we
can choose again: forgiveness over judgment, healing over sickness.

SILENT TESTIMONY: The Power of Healing

An important focus of this 2012 workshop is purpose, as it is in A Course in Miracles itself, for it
is the mind's purpose of awakening or remaining in the dream that determines how we perceive our
relationships and daily experiences. Purpose also determines whether our bodies offer witness to the
sins of others, or "mute testimony" to their sinlessness. The message we give another is the message
we choose to believe about ourselves. (Original title: "Mute Testimony" - The Power of Healing)

“IT IS BY BEAUTY THAT ALL BEAUTIFUL THINGS ARE BEAUTIFUL”

This 2012 workshop uses Plato’s discussion of beauty as the springboard for considering the
Course’s distinction between form and content, body and mind. A major focus is the metaphor of
ascending from the darkness of illusion to the light of truth, a primary theme running through all of
Plato and A Course in Miracles. Emphasis is also on the need to see everyone as the same and as
sharing the common purpose of remembering our absolute beauty as God’s Son.

THE STILLNESS OF SILENCE

This seminar from 2011 is structured around two poems of Helen Schucman: “Conversion” and
“Awake in Stillness.” These are the framework within which the ego’s raucous shrieking is com-

out judgment at the ego’s thought system of specialness. This process of forgiveness clears our
minds to hear the still, small Voice calling us home, along with all God’s Sons.

IDEAS LEAVE NOT THEIR SOURCE

This set combines a workshop and five-day Academy class from 2010. The principle that ideas
leave not their source not only expresses the Atonement but also undoes the belief that it is possible
to escape from guilt by perceiving it in the form of bodies. The miracle retraces the steps that led us
from the mind that is the source of the ideas of sin and guilt to attacking bodies as the projected
objects of these ideas. This makes it possible for our minds to choose again: holiness instead of sin.

THE EGO’S WORLD: The Thunder of the Meaningless
The class contrasts the ego’s meaningless world of separation (mind and body) with the Holy
Spirit’s meaningful world of forgiveness. As the ego’s seemingly ferocious thought system of illu-
sion is as ludicrous as a tiny mouse roaring at the universe (T-22.V), its world is indeed the thunder
of the meaningless. Its dark clouds are easily dispersed by the gentle smile of the Atonement that
teaches nothing happened but an errant thought that had no effect upon reality.

THE DARK POWER OF SECRECY

Our “Secret Sins and Hidden Hates”
The process of healing our minds rests on our willingness to look at what we have kept secret, pro-

While as individuals we have no power to change our life scripts, we have all power to change how

This workshop is based on two themes: All attack is self-attack; and because ideas leave not their

THE DECISION MAKER: “Throned Above Fate”

This 2007 workshop centers on the part of the mind to which Jesus addresses his course, asking it
to choose again. The discussion focuses on the ego’s attempt to identify us with the body so that we
can never correct our mistaken decision in our mind. The Course invites us to return power from the
body and world to the mind that made them, freeing us at last from the burden of being at the mercy
of forces beyond our control. We alone can choose to awaken from the ego’s dream and return home.

The syndrome exemplified by Shakespeare’s tragic hero refers to the horrific experience of believ-

“NOTHING SO BLINDING AS PERCEPTION OF FORM”
A key theme in A Course in Miracles is the ego’s confusion of form and content. The ego’s pur-
pose for the body and world (form) is to distract our attention from the mind (content), which con-
tains both the problem and the answer. By looking at the forms of our life through the Holy Spirit’s
true perception, we shift our purpose for living from survival within the dream to awakening from it.

ASKING THE HOLY SPIRIT

The ego’s strategy of mindlessness cleverly keeps the problem (the mind’s decision for the ego’s
guilt) from the answer (the mind’s decision for the Holy Spirit’s forgiveness). Therefore, until we
recognize the mind as the problem, we can never truly ask the Holy Spirit for anything. When we go
to Jesus for help and choose his holy instant, on the other hand, the problem is brought to the answer
where it can be let go. Thus we can say that Jesus’ love is the only answer to the only question.

MIRACLES VERSUS MAGIC

The workshop defines the function of magic as rooting us in the ego’s dream of separation, while
the role of the miracle is to gently awaken us. Guilt is projected onto the body, resulting in the body
becoming a maladaptive solution to a non-existent problem. The miracle offers us the true solution
of forgiveness, whereby we adopt Jesus’ attitude of non-judgment toward our attempts at magic. This
alleviates our guilt and frees us to look with open eyes at our mind’s mistake and choose again.

WHAT IS A COURSE IN MIRACLES? • Theory and Practice
This album consists of two lectures given at the Association for Research and Enlightenment in
Virginia Beach in 2005. The framework is the Course’s unique integration of non-dualism with
Freud’s psychodynamics of the ego. Thus, while taught that the ego and its world are illusory, we are
also taught to recognize its dynamic of projection. We are thereby led by the Holy Spirit beyond the
ego’s defensive walls—from mindlessness to mindfulness—to the love that is our true Self.

Although this workshop covers many aspects of the Course’s approach to psychotherapy, its prin-

of love. Without judgment to block it, this love naturally extends throughout the mind, proclaiming
the healing of both therapist and patient. (Presented in New York City in 2005)

The musings of Dostoevsky’s famed underground man give this workshop its title and set the stage

LOOKING WITH JESUS: The Practice of Forgiveness
This class began with a question about what it means to look at one’s ego with Jesus. The answer is
augmented by readings from the Course and further discussion. Looking with Jesus, the meaning of
forgiveness, undoes the ego’s judgment of guilt that leads to projection. Once our guilt is concealed,
we are prevented from ever looking at the real problem—the mind’s decision for the ego—so it can be
undone and the mind returned to the truth. Looking with Jesus, thus, is the answer to the separation.

A Course in Miracles is the basis of this March 2004 seminar. Correcting the misperception that in
hearing an inner voice one is hearing the Holy Spirit, the teaching and discussion of readings focus
on the principle that one cannot hear the Voice of the Holy Spirit without first hearing, recognizing,
and then choosing against the inner voice of the ego.

“ON THE THREE METAMORPHOSES”

Nietzsche, A Course in Miracles, and the Stages of Spirituality
A Course in Miracles is part of a long intellectual tradition that includes people such as Nietzsche.
Using his parable of the camel, the lion, and the child, the discussion unfolds the process of spiritual
development woven into the teachings of the Course. This journey proceeds in and through the
world and on to spiritual maturity, where everything now is seen through the eyes of forgiveness.

THE ARCH OF FORGIVENESS

This discussion drew its inspiration from the image of an arch immortalized by D.H. Lawrence in
his novel The Rainbow. As the child in the story was freed to live her life framed by the pillars of
love and strength represented by her parents, so Jesus asks us to view our daily lives as framed
between the pillars of forgiveness, allowing its quiet strength and gentle protection to nourish our
experience and sustain our learning.

to relate to Jesus, without being trapped in the ego’s transformation of him into a figure who meets our

THE GHOST OF CAESAR: Guilt’s Shadow

Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar is the framework for this workshop, which centers on the conse-

attempt to fix external problems and injustices without first undoing the thought system in the mind
that gives rise to cruelty, injustice, persecution, and wars. We act in truly helpful ways only when
our actions flow from the Holy Spirit’s Love, kept concealed by the mind’s projection of guilt.

JESUS: Companion on Our Journey

Choosing Jesus as our companion helps us to understand the nature of the journey, without which
it is meaningless. With Jesus as our guide, we return through the darkness to the light that was
always there. However, while our journey from the light was taken alone with the ego, we return with
our former special love and hate partners, which is what it means to join with Jesus in forgiveness.
Thus do we all return together to the light, with the light, as the light.

WHO IS JESUS?
Jesus is our elder brother who helps us grow to become like him. Resisting this growth, we remain
dependent on him for fulfillment of our specific requests, thus never allowing into awareness our
equality with him as spirit—God’s Son as He created him. By recognizing our childishness, we
invite Jesus to help us pass through the specific needs of childhood to spiritual maturity, and on to the
non-specific Self we share with him. Thus do we, like Jesus, become elder brothers to the world.

JESUS: “Bright Stranger”

Helen Schucman’s poem describes her—and our—attempt to keep Jesus’ love away, and the futil-
ity of such attempts. Fearing redemption, we try to bring Jesus into the world in order to deny he is in
our mind, love’s source. Although we defend against the ego with “locks and keys,” our defenses
lack the power to succeed, as the ego ultimately has no power over love. Jesus is the light that shines
in the dream, dissolving its fear as our defenses fall away before his gentle coming.

WALKING WITH JESUS
Walking with Jesus is impossible unless we bring everyone with us, friend and foe alike. Walking
with our egos means having specialness as our companion instead of love, and thus we walk only
with the special ones. Therefore, if we do not journey with all people, we journey alone, without the
one who tells us he stands at Heaven’s gate, holding open the door through which we cannot pass
unless we lay aside all thoughts of judgment and exclusion. This workshop was held in 2003.

ESCAPE FROM LOVE: Dissociating A Course in Miracles

This talk, originally part of a three-day class on the face of innocence, focuses on our need to split
off the Course’s teachings from our daily practice by unconsciously erecting a wall of denial. This is
the paradox of sincere students committing themselves to Jesus and his course, at the same time not
making the changes he advocates. Looking at this dissociation with the love of Jesus beside us
undoes it, enabling the wall of fear and judgment to dissolve as we learn to forgive ourselves.

JESUS: “The Ancient Love”

In discussing our love-hate relationship with Jesus, this 2002 workshop combines poems of Helen
Schucman with readings from A Course in Miracles. Our hate is born of the fear of growing up to

foreshadowed by the recognition of our inherent oneness with all the Sonship. In that vision is our
ascent up the ladder assured, as we grow to awaken to the truth of our Identity as God’s one Son.

LETTING GO OF JUDGMENT: Entering the Stately Calm Within

Originally part of a two-day program, this discussion is based on Jesus’ teaching that choosing to
attack and condemn others leads to our pain, while letting go of judgment brings us peace. Judgment
is thus seen as a “cosmic setup” serving the ego’s hidden agenda of proving that its separation from
God is real, but that others are responsible for it. Bringing this agenda to Jesus’ gentle forgiveness
lets the pain of our judgments go, to be replaced by the peace of the stately calm within.

JESUS: Light in the Dream

Using Freud’s theory of dreams as the framework, this half-day workshop focuses on Jesus as the
light of truth in the world’s illusory dream. His love is the call to us from outside the dream to take

Jesus exemplifies, thus making it possible for us to take his hand and leave the dream entirely.

DECIDING FOR GOD

Central to the process of deciding for God is the recognition that we first decided for the ego, and
therefore for a self in a dualistic universe. Jesus teaches us how to use this ego identity to decide

interpretation of it. Thus will our misguided decisions be corrected as we follow him beyond all

The first part of this workshop consists of a fable about two boats. The ego’s boat of separation,
judgment, and specialness takes us away from our home of love. Our return occurs through accepting

JESUS: Symbol and Reality

While a seemingly abstract and intellectual topic, the distinction between symbol and reality is
crucial to our spiritual growth as students of A Course in Miracles. To miss this aspect of its teach-
ings is to ensure that we remain spiritual children, never developing the relationship with Jesus that
will lead to our joining with him in the love and peace that is outside the world’s dream.

CLASSES ON THE MANUAL FOR TEACHERS OF

A COURSE IN MIRACLES
Reflecting the structure of symphonic compositions, these classes are orga-
nized around the two major themes in the manual, along with variations and
subsidiary themes. The first is that of separate versus shared interests, evolving
from the larger theme permeating the Course: separation versus the Oneness of
God’s Son. This theme unifies the questions comprising the manual, and is the
basis of the Course’s unique definition of a teacher of God. The second and
equally important theme is that of asking the Holy Spirit for help, central to
integrating the principles of A Course in Miracles into one’s daily life, without
which one cannot transcend the self-centered perception of separate interests.

THE WORKBOOK LESSONS OF A COURSE IN MIRACLES

The Study and Practice of the 365 Lessons

This series consists of 58 one-hour classes on the entire workbook: lessons,

introductions, reviews, summaries, and the Epilogue. Kenneth proceeded
through the workbook line by line, or when appropriate, reading and com-
menting only on the most important passages and themes of the lessons.
The purpose of these classes is to help students in understanding the les-
sons, and, most of all, in recognizing the importance of applying the daily les-
sons to their lives. Without such application, Jesus’ words in A Course in
Miracles simply become a sterile system of intellectual teachings, rather than
the living experience they are meant to be.

CLASSES ON THE TEXT OF A COURSE IN MIRACLES

This series consists of 32 two-hour classes conducted by Kenneth Wapnick
on the chapters in the text. The series begins with a general introduction to
the series and to the text itself: its form (the way it is written) and its content
(what it says). This introductory class shows how A Course in Miracles,
unlike most linearly structured texts, is symphonically presented, with its
themes and principles woven into the teachings throughout, much the same
as leitmotifs are woven into the fabric of a musical composition. The Course
is thus seen as the perfect integration of form and content, a framework
within which the prominent principles and themes in each chapter are pre-
sented in succeeding classes.
The overall purpose of these classes is to enhance students’ understanding
and appreciation of A Course in Miracles, both in terms of its magnitude as a thought system and as a work of
art. Such appreciation, it is hoped, would facilitate students’ study of the Course, enabling them to learn and
practice its teachings in a gently consistent manner as they strive to integrate them into their daily lives.

LOVE AND BE SILENT: King Lear, Defenselessness, and A Course in Miracles
The title of this workshop was inspired by a theme in Shakespeare’s King Lear, in which Cordelia
responded only with love and silence to the challenges of specialness posed by her father and sisters.
The discussion highlights the Course’s teachings on defenselessness and the love that demands sacri-
fice of no one, with emphasis on the application of this loving silence to all of our relationships.

THE PATHWAY OF FORGIVENESS

Forgiveness is explained as the means Jesus or the Holy Spirit uses to help us ascend the ladder
back to the Oneness from which we descended to establish our existence apart from God. Forgive-
ness leads us back to the decision-making part of our minds where, with Jesus guiding us, we are
able to choose the love that is our true reality as children of God.

This workshop centers on looking at the many forms of darkness hidden in our minds. The origins
of this darkness and the defenses that protect it are explained in the context of readings from

our relationship with Jesus, who can help us only by our willingness to bring the darkness to his light.

THE QUIET ANSWER: Asking the Holy Spirit
This workshop centers on the meaning of asking the Holy Spirit for help and our fear of hearing the
quiet answer. The ego’s pseudo-questioning is seen as perpetuating the real problem—the belief in sepa-
ration—while keeping the real answer—the Atonement principle—hidden. The quiet answer of Jesus
undoes the dream of specialness by bringing us back to our minds, where we can choose the holy instant
and then hear and become one with the true answer: the Love of God beyond all words and symbols.

ëTHE MEANING OF FORGIVENESS
Forgiveness, the central teaching of A Course in Miracles, has almost universally been misunder-
stood. In this workshop, its true meaning is contrasted with the distortions coming from the world’s
version, which has made forgiveness into a scourge rather than the pathway home to God. When we
look with Jesus at our experiences of victimization, he helps us see both their cause and their healing.
These lie only in the mind’s decision, either to be joined with his love or to remain separate from it.

In this workshop, the importance of Jesus in the ego’s plan of atonement is contrasted with his
importance in the Holy Spirit’s plan. The ego’s Jesus—the biblical Jesus—validates the centrality of
individual and bodily existence, thereby ensuring the ego’s continuation; whereas the Jesus of
A Course in Miracles is shown to symbolize the thought of God’s Love in our minds that gently
leads us out of the dream of specialness and individuality.

HOW WILL THE WORLD END?

This class focuses first on the nature of the world and its purpose in the ego’s plan to replace God

in the solution of problems in the world. In the second part, the “ending” of this world is shown to rest
on the recognition that it is but the illusion of separation from God and Heaven, and will occur when
the need to believe in this illusion is withdrawn through acceptance of the Holy Spirit’s forgiveness.

In this workshop, the process of leaving and then returning to our home in Heaven is explained in

JESUS: The Manifestation of the Holy Spirit

This workshop focuses on the importance of remaining true to our experience of Jesus, while at
the same time recognizing that his reality transcends all of these individual experiences. Also dis-
cussed in depth is the importance of Jesus as our guide, and the relationship of Jesus to Helen Schuc-
man and to A Course in Miracles itself. Our experience and the reality of Jesus are viewed
metaphorically, using the symbol of a ladder, taken from the scribed pamphlet The Song of Prayer.

TRUE EMPATHY: The Greater Joining

This workshop centers on the contrast between the ego’s and the Holy Spirit’s versions of empa-
thy. The ego’s empathy expresses its viciousness that masquerades as loving concern. It is the tri-
umph of weakness, for it depreciates the power of the mind that has chosen to be victimized. The true
empathy of the Holy Spirit reflects the mind’s choice to identify with His perception and strength,
which allows this vision of all-inclusive love to be extended to victims and victimizers alike.

THE REAL WORLD: Our Home Away from Home

This workshop is presented as a journey beginning with our true home in Heaven, then proceeding
to our seeming separation from God into the world, made by the ego as a substitute for Heaven. Fol-
lowing the Course’s path of joining with the Holy Spirit or Jesus—through forgiveness—we are then
led into the real world. This state of mind, in which all thoughts of separation are gone, is our home
away from home, the goal of A Course in Miracles.

HEALING THE UNHEALED HEALER
The discussion in this workshop centers on the characteristics of the unhealed healer, specifically:
the investment in seeing differences and separation, making the error real, and depreciating the
power of the mind. The healing of the unhealed healer’s mind is seen as the willingness to join with
Jesus in understanding all forms of sickness and problems to be calls for love mirroring one’s own
call for love, and then in accepting the Holy Spirit’s loving answer to those calls.

TO JUDGE OR NOT TO JUDGE

This workshop presents the teachings of A Course in Miracles on judgment, emphasizing the idea
that we are asked not to give up judging, but rather to give up our investment in believing we are
capable of making our own judgments. A line-by-line commentary on Lesson 151, “All things are
echoes of the Voice for God,” forms the basis for exploring the Course’s principles regarding judg-
ment, and the process of allowing the Holy Spirit or Jesus to judge all things for us.

The Course’s approach to food addictions and weight issues is presented in this dialogue with

enced by almost everyone, and the process of resolving these conflicts by perceiving our lives as
classrooms in which the Holy Spirit can help us learn the meaning of forgiveness.

WHAT IT MEANS TO BE A TEACHER OF GOD

The discussion in this workshop is in three parts. The first discusses the ten characteristics of a
teacher of God that are presented in the manual for teachers. The second discusses the teacher of
God’s temptation to use magic, which solves problems where they are not—i.e., in the body or the
world—and thus provides a false sense of healing. Finally, true healing is explained as the undoing
of our only problem, which is the mind’s decision to be guilty.

SICKNESS AND HEALING

The discussion in this workshop focuses on the mind’s decision to be guilty as the cause of all
sickness, and the purpose sickness serves in the ego thought system as a defense against God’s Love.
Healing thus is seen as taking place in the mind rather than the body, and undoes our belief in the
reality of guilt. This is accomplished by turning to the Holy Spirit, correcting our original mistake of
having turned to the ego, and joining His healing thoughts of forgiveness.

OUR GRATITUDE TO GOD
The theme of gratitude is discussed in this workshop in the context of our gratitude to God, Jesus
and the Holy Spirit, and each other. The many forms of our resistance to being grateful are discussed
in depth, and are shown to stem ultimately from the original separation thought, where we resented
God’s having created us, and insisted instead that we created ourselves. Our everyday expressions of
gratitude, therefore, help us to undo this original error.

THE AUTHORITY PROBLEM

The discussion in this workshop focuses on the authority problem with God, showing how this
ontological conflict is the ultimate basis of all forms of authority problems in the world. The author-
ity problem with Jesus and its effect on one’s study of A Course in Miracles is also discussed. These
issues are further explored in the context of the ego’s investment in maintaining the belief in separa-
tion, which is undone through our forgiveness of each other.

JESU: Teacher of Forgiveness, Model of Resurrection

This workshop focuses on Jesus—who he is and how we can develop a relationship with him, as
he asks us to do in A Course in Miracles. The blocks to this relationship are discussed, specifically
our grievances against him which are rooted, sometimes secretly, in the traditional notions of the
crucifixion and the resurrection. Thus, Jesus helps us to demonstrate his forgiving message of the
Atonement in our own lives.

This is the story of the scribing of A Course in Miracles. It consists of introductory comments, the
concluding session from “The Simplicity of Salvation,” and reflections by Kenneth on Helen Schucman
(the scribe) and William Thetford (her collaborator, colleague, and friend). Helen’s experiences preced-
ing and during the scribing are conveyed in this presentation, as is her ambivalent relationship with
Jesus: her anger and disillusionment as well as her profound gratitude and love.

This album provides a succinct overview of the teachings of A Course in Miracles. The two levels
of the Course’s teachings are first explained: Level One contrasts truth and illusion, God and the ego;
Level Two contrasts the two interpretations of the illusory world, the ego’s and the Holy Spirit’s.
These distinctions are the basis for the discussion of the ego’s thought system and its undoing
through the Holy Spirit’s thought system that includes forgiveness and holy relationships.

Beginning with the metaphysics of A Course in Miracles, Gloria and Kenneth Wapnick explain
how the ego’s wrong-minded thinking is corrected by the Holy Spirit’s thought system of forgive-

God’s Love remains, exemplified in our world by Jesus. Excerpts of an interview with Gloria and
Kenneth follow the workshop. (Audience questions have been voiced over to enhance audibility.)
