HEALTH OPTIMIZING PHYSICAL EDUCATION 12

FIRST SEMESTER 2020-2021

( First Quarter )
PHYSIOLOGICAL INDICATORS
HEALTH OPTIMIZING PHYSICAL EDUCATION 11 MODULE NO. 4
LESSON 2: PHYSIOLOGICAL INDICATORS; HEART RATE, RATE OF PERCEIVED EXERTION AND
PACING ASSOCIATION WITH MODERATE TO VIGOROUS PHYSICAL ACTIVITIES (MVPAs)
Most Essential Learning Competency:

Analyzes Physiological Indicators such as Heart Rate, Rate of Perceived Exertion and Pacing Association
with Moderate to Vigorous Physical Activities (MVPAs) to Monitor and/or adjust participation or effort.

Objectives:

At the end of the lesson, students should be able to:

* Identify the different physiological indicators to monitor and/or adjust participation or effort;

* Enumerate and discuss the different physiological indicators to monitor and/or adjust participation or
effort;
* Analyze Physiological Indicators.

Pretest:

Directions: Choose the correct answer to each respective number to complete the sentence. Write the
letter and the word for the answer.

1. An indicator of level of participation in physical activity.

a. Heart Rate c. Prediction Equation
b. Maximum Heart Rate d. Rate of Perceived Exertion
2. Literally means the maximum number of times the heart contracts in one minute.
a. Heart Rate c. Prediction Equation
b. Maximum Heart Rate d. Rate of Perceived Exertion
3. A formula to determine your maximum heart rate, based on your age.
a. Heart Rate c. Prediction Equation
b. Maximum Heart Rate d. Rate of Perceived Exertion
4. Can measure exercise intensity and can be combined with the Prediction Equation.
a. Heart Rate c. Prediction Equation
b. Maximum Heart Rate d. Rate of Perceived Exertion
5. A more accurate measure of heart rate.
a. Maximal Stress Test c. Prediction Equation

Visual Thinking Approach: PROPER TECHNIQUES IN FINDING THE HEART RATE

Apical Site Carotid Pulse Site Radial Pulse Site Temporal Pulse Site Target Heart Rate

Directions: Choose the correct answer for the proper pulse rate measuring techniques. Write
your answer in the blank provided in each corresponding number.

1. _________________ ,a pulse taken at the apex of the heart and can be felt very clearly by placing
the heel of the hand over the left side of the chest.
2. _________________ , a pulse taken from the carotid artery just beside the larynx using light pressure
from the tips of the pointer and middle fingers.
3. _________________ . a pulse taken from the radial artery at the wrist, in line with the thumb, using
the tip of the pointer and middle fingers.
4. _________________ , a pulse can be sometimes be obtained from the left or right temple with light
pressure from the tip of the pointer and middle fingers
5. _________________ , is computed based on the maximal heart rate and the resting heart.

Unlocking difficulties: Definition of terminologies.

1. Heart Rate

2. Prediction Equation

3. Rate of Perceived Exertion

4. Maximum Heart Rate

5. Maximal Stress Test
6. Apical Site
7. Carotid Pulse Site
8. Radial Pulse Site
9. Temporal Pulse Site
10. Target Heart Rate

Brief Introduction:

Everyone is unique and everyone has his/her own personal physical threshold. Given the same
activity, each person has different exertion and placing levels. In order to maximize the benefits of
exercise without going beyond one’s limit, one must first know how to find his/her limit. One must
know how to determine his/her maximum heart rate and at what percent of heart rate would work for
him/her. One might be overexerting in exercise, or may not be exerting enough.

Exercise:

Activity: Finding the Heart Rate following the proper pulse rate measuring techniques.

Assess your physical fitness lifestyle. Perform and do by your own the given activities. Fill out the data
from each activity properly to the table below.

Important Note:

* Kindly do a research for the formula in finding your heart rate using the given proper pulse rate
measuring techniques.

Generalization:

Physiological indicators involve the direct or indirect observation of variables attributable to

normative functioning systems and subsystems in the human body. In humans, these include phenomena
such as heart rate, blood pressure, body temperature, serum levels of various stress
hormones, immunological functions, cortical activity and biochemical markers that can be used to assess
welfare .

Post test: ESSAY. Discuss the following statements based on your studies. ( 5 points each statement)

1. What is the Prediction Equation formula?

2. Describe the Rate of Perceived Exertion (RPE).

3. Give the Formula to determine your maximum heart rate, based on your age.
