Lesson Summary:

Understanding basic math skills such as addition, subtraction and multiplication. We will use a
couple warm up worksheets in addition, subtracting and multiplication, then using those skills,
start to discuss word problems and harder questions.

Estimated Duration:

This lesson should take between one and two hours, with each class being divided into 30
minute increments, so around four days total. About 10 minutes for the warm up worksheet
problems and 20 minutes going over the sheets and doing more difficult questions.

Commentary:

I want to approach this lesson with the idea that they already have some basic math skills and
easy number math lessons. What might be a challenge will be those kids who just need the
extra help and who can’t grasp the concept as thoroughly as others might. I also need to be
cautious that I don’t spend too long on individual activities, since they might get bored or
distracted. I plan on hooking my kids into this activity by offering a prize at the end when they
get the whole worksheet right, maybe giving them a sticker or a fun pen.

Instructional Procedures:
Day 1:
First ten minutes: warm up activity- students will get a worksheet with questions about
addition, subtraction and multiplication of basic easy numbers of mental math. When they
finish it, they could get a sticker or a fun prize if they get it right.
Next 15 minutes: I will provide a presentation on these subjects such as more practice
problems that get increasingly more difficult such as going from 2-3, 2+3, 2x3 to 5-3, 5+3,
5x3, and so on, making the numbers bigger and larger.
Last five minutes: I will go over any questions they have or ideas they are stuck on. Possibly
giving them extra practice problems for homework depending on how the lesson goes.

Day 2:
First ten minutes: pass out the introductory worksheet activities and collect the homework to
grade/review. Simple problems of addition, subtraction and multiplication that involve more
detailed math and answers with larger numbers.
Next 5 minutes: go over the homework (if any was given) and answer any questions they
might have.
Last 15 minutes: I will give a presentation on the next part of the standard. I will get them
ready to discuss short word problems. Give them homework based on how the class went
and if they need extra practice.

Day 3:
First ten minutes: pass out the warm up activity with basic addition, subtraction and
multiplication problems. Have most be basic algorithms while two are word problems on the
bottom of the page. I will collect the homework (if any was given) and grade it.
Next five minutes: Go over the homework and answer any question they might have.
Last 15 minutes: Start presentation on basic addition, subtraction and multiplication word
problems. Help them understand how to read them and how to get the correct information out
of the problem. I will give them a homework sheet with 2-4 word problems for them to get
extra practice and understanding of the lesson.

Day 4:
Last day of going over this lesson
First 10 minutes: Pass out the warm up activity with 10 to 15 basic algorithm addition,
subtraction and multiplication problems and 4 word problems. Collect the homework and
grade it.
Next five minutes: Pass back homework and go over it, answering any questions they might
have.
Last 15 minutes: start review presentation on basic addition, subtraction and multiplication
skills with word problem. Give an extra activity based on how the lesson is going. Help them
completely grasp the basic math standard while answering any questions.
Pre-Assessment:

I will give the students a pre-assignment on basic addition, subtraction and multiplication
skills with word problems included. This might be a worksheet activity or something else.
This is to understand where each kid is at in the learning and what I need to go over again or
briskly discuss.

This worksheet would be about 20 standard algorithm problems of addition, subtraction and
multiplication skills and 5 short word problems. This is to see where each kid stands on the
lesson and what needs to be covered or only discussed.

Then, I would like to play a short game where each kid can get the opportunity to answer a
math problem on the board, seeing their learning in action and seeing where they are at in
person.

Scoring Guidelines:

The scoring guidelines will be with each standard problem being 1 point and the word
problems being 2-4 points.

The rubric will be if they can show their work and answer the question problem for their basic
problems and having the word problems be if they can correctly identify the information and
solve it correctly.

Also, by giving them a short worksheet pre-quiz, I will give them the opportunity to ask me
any questions they might have while they can see where they are at personally in the
assignment.

Post-Assessment:

At the end of the lesson, I will give a detailed quiz, just like the pre assignment where there
will be with each standard problem being 1 point and the word problems being 2-4 points.
This will be somewhat like the pre-assignment, but they questions will be more detailed and
harder mental math, while the work problems are detailed as well.

Scoring Guidelines:

The rubric will be if they can show their work and answer the question problem for
their basic problems and having the word problems be if they can correctly identify
the information and solve it correctly. Just like pre-assignment. Each standard
problem being 1 point and the word problems being 2-4 points
Differentiated Instructional Support
Describe how instruction can be differentiated (changed or altered) to meet the needs of
gifted or accelerated students:
I want to find an online activity they can do, such as Math facts in a flash, and have them
complete the assignment as detailed and quickly as possible. This will provide them with a
sense of accomplishment because the questions will be harder mental math skills and time
trials.
Discuss additional activities you could do to meet the needs of students who might be
struggling with the material:
I want to give additional practice problems for those who aren’t grasping the concept right
away. This can be in the form of homework and giving them extra problems during the warm
up worksheet time.

This link can be used as an extra source of practice problems. Parents can print out these
papers and give them to the students as extra homework for practice problems. If they are
grasping the concept, they can work on harder problems of mental math and larger numbers,
or if they still need help, they can just complete extra practice problems.
I will ask them to give me some extra sheets so I can review them and maybe give them
extra love if I know they are trying really hard in the lesson.

Homework Options and Home Connections

I will give simple worksheet problems as homework, sometimes including word problems for
higher points. Such as
Interdisciplinary Connections

During this lesson I want kids to learn how to do basic math worksheets for warm up
problems and homework. I also want kids to learn to show their work. This helps both the
student and I understand their thought process while also being able to follow their work

I also want to use an online math program for those who are
doing really well in the lesson to give them extra practice and
harder questions not discussed in class. This can be done on
an IPad or computer. The lesson presentation will be done on
a smartboard where they can interact with the screen
