ME 355: Compressible Flows, Spring 2016 Stanford University Homework 3: Convergent-divergent nozzles, and flows with heat addition Due Tuesday, May 17, in class Guidelines: Please turn in a neat and clean homework that gives all the formulae that you have used as well as details that are required for the grader to understand your solution. Attach these sheets to your solutions. Assume y= 1.4 and ¢ = 1 KJ/KEK for all problems, Student's Names... TAMER... WREAY, Student's ID: SCRAMJETS (supersonic combustion ramjets) are utilized as propulsion systems for suborbital hyper sonic vehicles. SCRAMJET-powored vehicles carry the fuel on board, and obtain the oxidizer by ingestion of atmospheric oxygen. SCRAMJET engines are composed of three basic components: an inlet supersonic diffuser, where incoming air is compressed through a shock train; a combustor, where sgaseous fuel bums supersonically with atmospheric oxygen to produce heat; and a diverging nozzle, ‘where the hot combustion products are accelerated to produce thrust. A model description of the SCRAMJET power plant of the X-13A hypersonic alrcraft is provided in the figure below, where ‘May = 5, 6 = 15", Py =O. bar, Ty = 270 K and Ay/As = 05. XA HyperX a) Compute the Mach number Mag, static pressure P, and static temperature 75 at the combustor inet b) Calculate the amount of heat release per unit mass that is required in the combustor to attain sonic conditions May = 1.0 at the nozzle inlot section (combustor exit). What are the associated static temperature T, and pressure P,? Stanford University: ¢) Determine the Mach number Mas and static pressure Psat the nozzle exit. 4) Show that the thrust F produced by the engine can be written as a PAs and compute its numerical value for Ag = 0.03 m?. PB 2 Fl + aM = (+ 7Maj), Q) ©) Characterize the jet flow at the exhaust. Compute the streamline deflection angle and Mach number downstream from the first set of expansion fans. 1) The length of the combnstor is L = 10 cm, and the autoignition time of the fuel+tair mixture at ‘temperature 7; and pressure P; is ty = 10 4s. Estimate the ratio of the characteristic residence time of a fluid particle in the combustor to the autoignition time. The ratio represents the Damkikler ‘umber Da. Based on the estimated value of Da, is the residence time in the combustor sufficiently large to warrant combustion of the reactants? ee | Sees pean Mes NT 243° omuiace shack ee vans TAG TZ Verma toa, ee east Pez > Maye Kec. a7 | Bae 8e Le a Webel the Bh Ts ak h Te Be BG. ~ rR L) Few some coverront Hays 0, THE se41 Anes ssi be pees aL, wy lhe) Men Ty Tag 2040) lh) tees 70.39 Mi)> 3064 FF, Le + % (Gn) Yow = 0.52 a is * Teens S66 TS (4 SE Foy = Poze ate Ty (t+ cine) Tye Lies.
