Film Genre Script: Draft

Video running time: Approximately 10 minutes

Draft disclaimer: The script will be incorporated in the video after the introduction of the

Disney characters of focus. A combination of the movie clips and recordings of myself will be

incorporated to persuade the audience about the bias that is present in Disney films regarding

African-American women/characters, which in itself perpetuates racial injustice. I am still

debating on doing this type of video style or either doing a voiceover using images and clips

from the movies of focus.

1940s Fantasia is a beloved movie by many but under the surface of its majestic aesthetic

and orchestral ambiance lies a world of oppression. In the movie, while the rest of the characters

are centaurs with vibrant colors and soft features, Sunflower is not. She is a little girl portrayed

as a mule, with barely any clothes to cover her. Her features are exaggerated and she is portrayed

as the subordinate to the centaurs, those of light skin portrayed as beautiful. Fantasia was later

adapted to remove scenes of Sunflower for the backlash Disney received. Rather than addressing

racial issues, Disney removed Sunflower from the movie, adding on to the idea that African-

Americans (at least characters and their portrayal) do not belong in the big screen.

This changed in the live adaptation of Cinderella in 1997. Brandy Norwood became

Disney’s first black princess. Even so, a controversy was stirring.

1. Explain controversy

2. Compare the movie to the recent live adaptation with Lily James

Draft disclaimer: The same format will apply when explaining the last two examples: Disney’s

Princess and the Frog and the upcoming live-action of The Little Mermaid starring Halle Bailey.

I am still debating on whether I want to do a voiceover or film myself talking.
