Of these, 8512 sample villages. and 9744 blocks formed the Central Sample and ware surveyed by the NSSO staff belong- ing to its Field Operations Division, Under the NSS matching scheme the remaining villages and blocks constituting the State Semple vere surveyed by the ficld staff of the res- pective State Statistical Agencies. 24 Households from eech of the sample villages and 24 households, on an average, from 2 urban ple block were selected for the survey, 1/ 4/ For details, see the note on Sampling Design and Fstimation Procedur given in ppendix-I, -2e 4.3 Subject coverage : The following six schedules of investigation were canvassed in the survey + (4) Household Schedule 19.1 = cattle, buffalo, ¥ak, mithun and poultry; (44) Household Schedule 19.2 = Hourse, donkey, mule, camel and elephant; (141) Household schedule 19,3 - sheep, goat and pigs (iv) Household Schedule 19.4 - consumption of livestock products; (v) Hcusehold Schedule 20 - livestock enterprises and (vi) Schedule 20,1 - Non-household livestock enterprises. Thus the survey covered all the Livestock, sole possessed in the housekold sector (through schs. 19.1, 19.2, 19.3) and also such non-househcld estab- Ushments which ere not registered under 2m(1) or 2m(11) of Factories #ct, 1948 and engaged in the enterprises such as (1) @aizy, (11) poultry and (iii) piggery(sch.20.1). Besides this, some ancillary village level deta having some bearing on the development of animal susbendry activities ~ were also collected through a vill ge schedule 3.1. In adeition, one village schedule 3.2 was also canvassed in the semple villages for collecting information on migratory flocks cf bovines, peck cnimals and bovines, 1.4 Zabulation programme on Schedule 79.1 + Since bovine populeticr forms the ‘nhst important category of livestock, an.elaborate progremme for tabulating the data collected through schedule 19.1 (i.e. on bovine and poultry) been apvroved by the Goverriing Council of the NSSO. The tebuletion proghamme hed been planned in such 2 manner that the first phase tabulation provided estimetes or. proportion of animals in milk to milch animals, cuantity of milk produced end concentr+tes used per animal in-milk classified by species, ege-groups and also by intervals since calved, quantity of milk produced per producer household (seperately for covs end buffaloes), sale of fluid milk and milk products by producer households etc. From the second phase tebuletion, estinetes obtained were the average number of livestock possessed clessified by age, sex, use, household lend possessed, industry division, type of breed etc., birth, death and fertility rates of bovines, celving interval of adult femsles, increment of stock cte. -3- 1.5 Content of the report : Tie results of the first phase of the tabulation containing estimates at region, state and all-India level and in some cases seperately for each sub-round have already been releesed through NSS draft renort No, 261-series, The’part of the results of the second phase of the tabulation at etete and alle India level have alse been released through NSS draft report No, 299 entitled "Rstimetes of number, birth, death and calving interval of bovines'. The present report is also based on.the survey results obtained, from the second phase of the tobulation plan in respect of each state ané all-India for rurel and urban sectors. In section Two, the important findings of the survey results heve been discussed. The tebles showing the survey results for e11 the four sub-rounds combined at. the state ard all-Indiz levels for rural and urban segtors separately have been presented in Appendix-II, The results of altoge- ther five tables have been provided in this pgport. In table (1) the percentage distribution of milch animals by species over conception, type has been presented, Table, (2) gives the distribution of ¢ry enimals classified by age-group over period of previous Jectation. In teble (3) the cuantity of milk yield (0.00 lite) and concentrates used (0,00 Kg.) per animal in-milk by size group of milk yeleld and by species has been presented. Table (4) provides estimates of quant$ty (0,00 litre) ‘of milk produced per animal in-milk classified by number of times calved and interval since last calving for each species. In table (5) is presented the percentage distribution of animals in-milk and quantity of milk yield per animal inemilk clessified bv species and emount of concentrates used. In all the sbove tebles, date in respect of only cattle and buffalo have been presented. Data in respect of yak and sifthun ere not presented in this report since the mumbers of these animals were found to be too small to build up any reliable estimate. -4e~ 4.6 Participetion of States ; #11 the States and Union Territories except «ierat, H.ryana, Maharashtra, Orissa, Delhi and Goa, Daman & Diu srticipeted in the survey on full etching basis. “hile Gujeret end Delhi wad couble matching sample in both rural end urban sectors, Maharashtra and Orissa participated on double m#tching basis in rural sector only and of full matching besis in urban sector. The corresponding percentage for about 2 millon’ mglch cattle in urban India is 9.58, For buffaloes, the incidence of artificial insemination is still less. Of the 21 million and 1 million milch buffaloes in rural and urban India respectively only 1.73 percent and 4,12 per omt ere artifi- cially inseminated. 2.1.1 In the rurel sector, the incidence of artificiel insemination of cattle varies from state to state. Pondi- cherry recorded the highest percentage of 20.28 of the total milch cattle followed by Kerala(18.78) and Tripura (10.43). In Menipur, Tamil Nadu, West Bengal, Delhi, Goa, Daman @ Diu, Kernetake, Punjeb, Assam and Haryens, the percentage of milch cattle artificially inseminated rengea between 5 per cent to 3 yer cent. For remaining states this figure. ig-es low as + to 2 per oent, ‘In urban areas, Kerala recorded the highest percentage of artificial insemination Ge of milch cattle (39.97 per cont.) follewed by Madhya Pradesh (34.69, per cert) and Tripura (27,83 per cent:), The corres- ponding percentages for Karnatdka, Himechel Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Pondicherry and Haryana lie between ebout 20 to 15 wepoent and’ that for Punjab, West Bengal, Assam, orissa, Goa, Demon & Diu, Andhra Pradesh, Manipur, Uttar Pradesh and Maharashtra between 10 to 15 menoamt. For the remaining stetes, this percentage vartes between 4 wenoemt to about 1. 2.1.2 In respect of the buffeloes in the rural areas, the percentage of milch buffaloes artificially inseminated is highest (14 par cent) in Goa, Daman & Diu, while it-is between 7 ogeNt to 5 pmrnemk in Assam, ‘est Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Delhi, Tripure and Kerala, between 4 penoomt to 3 percent in Pondicherry, Gujeret, Madhy. Pradesh, Meghalaya, Karneateke end Menipur and, between 2 mencemt to about 1 percent in the remaining states (excepting Orissa). In the urban areas, Kerela recofded the highest percertage(26 per cent) of milch buffaloes being artificially inseminated whereaf, in est Bengal and Tamil Nadu this rate is about 12 per cent followed by Manipur (about 8 pex vent) and Karna- taka (about 7 per cont). In Himachal Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Goa, Daman & Diu, Orissa and Andhr Predesh the corresponding ratevartembetwe n ebout 6 per cant to 4 ‘per cant, In the remaining states this estimate is less than 4 percent. 2.2.1 Laetation period of bovine population : To get an idea about tha full lactation period yovines, informatién was collected ir respect of such bovines which were reported to be "dry' on the date of survey. For such bovines the period o lactation prior to becoming "dry" was ascertained and record d in the schedule of enquiry. The survey results reveal thet the average periods of previous 1 ctation for cows are 9 end 8 months respectively in rurel and urben grees and 10 and 9 months for buffeloes in these two sectors: However, there 1s . wide veriation in 2/ For details, see Table 4 of NSS Report No. 299. 7 of the lactation perioddbovines es. evident from the data presented in Table (2) of Appendix II which shows the distribution of dry bovines classified by age group and period of previous lactation. It is seen from the above teble that t the ell- India level in rural sector although about 42 par amt of cows have @ lactation pericd of 10-15 months, about 25 and 48 zormaut fall in the class of 7-9 and 4+6 months respectively. A similar pattern is observed in the urban sector where about 4C, 27 and 18 merweat of the cows belong to the group of 10~15,-7-9 and 4-6 months respectively. Tt is interesting to note thet atout 7 gor cast of cows in rural sector and 8 peramt in urban sector have reported. lactation period as low as 3 months or below, So’ faP es buffaloes cre concerned, sbout 52 and 24 rereent reported to have. the, lactation period of 10-15 and 7-9 months * respectively, in the rurel sector, the corresponding per- centages for the urban sectcr being 50 and 25, Further, about 10 per cont of buffaloes in the rural sector gngd 11 pévroent in the urban sector have lactation period which exvends between 4 to 6 months. 4s fer es the essociation betwen the age of femele bovines end the duration of Isctetion is concerned, the survey results inéicate thet for cows 98 well as buffaloes the number felling under higher brackets of lectation period,is constituted of proportionately more femmes of higher age-group and this feature is discerntale both in rural and#e¥tors, Interestingly, for both’, the species of bovines, the percentages falling under the leétetion periods of 10-15 end sbove 15 months are more in the rural sector then those of the urban sector. 2.2.2 Duration of lectation of cows veries to an appre= ciable extent over the states. It ts seen thet more then 60 percent of, the cowe in rural areas have'a lactation period of 10 months and above in Jammu & Kashmir, Gujarst and West Bengal while only 30 percent is reported to have -8- the same lactation period in Heryana and Delhi. on the other hand, although less than 4 per-oant of cows report lectetion period of 3 months or below in vest Bengal (2.70), Meghaleva(2.72), ‘ssam(3.43) and Andhra Pradesh (3.61), 13 percent or more have been reported in the same lectation group ir Delhi(0.78), Oriss=(13.26), ‘Meripur (13,03) and Heryena(12,89), + In the urban sector, more than 60 percent of the ary ogus are found to be in the group of lactation period ~ 40 months and above again in Jemma & Kashmir and Gujarat alongwith Heghaleya, In contrast, Negalend, Haryana and Delhi have 7, 28 and 30 percent of the cows respectively in the same lactation period. 4s regards the buffaloes in thé rural sectoy' the lectation period of as high as 68, 83 and 71 ‘per camt of the dry buffaloes are found to be in the group of10 months ..and above in Jammu & Keshmir, Himachal Pradesh and West Bengal where es 50 per cant of the dry buffaloes are observed to be in the above lactation group in Haryana.and Delhi, Further, less than 4 “per-oent of the dry buffaloes report lactetion, neriod of 3 months or below in Meghalaya (1.92), Jemm & Kashmir(2.24) and Utter Predesh(2,46) as opposed tc 35,00, 20,39 and 19.43 ‘per come observed in Delhi, Manipur and Orissa respectively, Of the buffaloes in the urban sector of the stetes, Jamu & Kashmir, Cujaret and Pondicherry report more than 70 pexsoent of the dry buffaloes in the lsctation period of 10 months end above. On the other side of the scale is Tripure, Delhi and Utter Pradesh which report less than 50 ‘pew'sent in the said group. 2.3.1 of bovine milk and the use of concentrates ‘The milk yield per enimal in-milk per day is quite low in India. It is seen from Table (3) gf Appendix IT that in rural sector the ewerage.- yield rate of milk 4s’ 4,05 litres for cows and 2.61 Litres for buffaloes. The corres ponding rates in urban India are 1.98 and 3,60 litres. It is also noticed thet the percentege of ‘cowp inwmilk having yield rate of milk upto 1.00 litre is as high as 73,08 in rural sector and 44,47 4n urban sector, The percentage of buffaloes yielding ilk upto 2,00 litres are 56.78 and 37.86 in rural and urban India respectively. The estimates also reveal that 2 consi- derable proportion of cows inemilk do not yield any milk for huran consumption. This feature is also observed in the urban sector of the states. but with lesser magnitude, Cows 4nenilk reporting no milk is highest again in Andhra Pradesh(29.04) follqwed by Goa, Daman & Diu (22.73), Maharashtra (40.45) and-Orissa’ (10.04), The practice of not milking the ant~ nals inemilk for bunan consumption is not very much applicable in case of buffaloes as most of the states have reported small. percentage of such animals in-milk even in rural sector. It nay be’ worthwhila to mention here that some of the schedules of enquiry have recorded that calves are alowed to consume the entire milk for bringing up strong bullock. Further, the percentage distribution of animals in-milk over size group of miik yield (Table 3 of Appendix II) shows that in rural India the percentage of cows in-milk decreases progressively with the increase in the size group of nil yield, However, in the urban sector, the said percentage increa- ses with the increase in the size group of milk yield upto the class 1,00 -.2,00 litres and starts decreasing thereafter. This feature is also‘noticed in case of buffalo both in rural and upban sectors, 20362. Further, compared to rural stotor, the rate af. average consumption of concentrates by cows. and buffaloes in “urban sector is higher in all the states except for cows in Nanipur and for buffeloea in Assens “It may‘not be out ‘of place to mention that the average milk yield for both cows and ‘buffa~ loes are higher in the urban sector compared to rural sector. However, the low rate of average consumption of concentrates ,by bovine observed in rural and urban India-is explained "by. the fact that large number 6f bovines in-milk do not consume any concentrate at all, The data presented in Table 5 of Appendix I show that in rural india as high as 70.53 percent cows and 41.4 percent buffaloes of thé respective in-milk bovines are not pro vided with concentrates! The. corresponding percentage figures 'f urban India are 39,28-and 21.21 respectively for inemilk cows and buffaloes. The situation in sone’ of the statss is still worse, ‘In rural sector of Meghalaya, Orissa, Assen, Madhya Pradesh, Tripur end Maharashtra, the percentage of cows in-nilk not consuming any concentrate varies between 82 to 97. In contrast, for Pondi cherry, Kerala and Delhi this rate varies between 9 to 20, 80 far as buffaloes in rural sector aru concerned, concentrate is not used at all in Neghaleya and Tripura. Also concentrates are not given'to more than 80 percent of the in-milk buffeloes in Assan, Orissa and Monipur, However, for Pondicherry, Kerala and Delhi, the percentage of buffaloes inmilk not using any concen trate 4s quite small, Similar feature in respect of noneuse of concentrates by the in-milk bovine is’ observed in the urban sector also. The quantity of milk yield per animal in-nilk, except in few cages,, increases -progressively over the amount of con= centrates upto the class 5,0-10.0°kg, -But, of the ‘total cows inemilk who ane given apy concentrate, about 93 ani 87 percent respectively in rural and urban sectors are found to.be using concentrxtes only upto 2.0 “g, lhe Said percontage figures for buffaloes in-wilk are 866 and 74, 2.4.4 Average milk yield of inwwilk bovines classified by the interval since last calving and number of times calyed + In table 4, appendix II of the report, data have been presented to study as to whether yield rate cf milk per inemilk bovine is depentient on the factors, like, linterv2l since calved' and ‘number of times calved', Thase data have been presented for rural and urabn areas for edch. state and all-India, It is seen that at the all-India level in the rural sector the highest yield rate for cattle {1,30 kg.) and buffaloes G.53 kg.) is reported in the 3rd and 2nd months from the 2ast calving respectively, In urban sector, the naximm yield rate of milk is reported by cows (2.55 kg») in the 2nd month and that by buffaloes. (4.64 kg.) in the 3rd month since. calved. However, state level estinates indicate that normally highest yield rate of milk is ohtained from in-milk bovines within 4 sonths fron their culvipg. This phenomenon is observed in both rursi and urban areas for cows as well as buffaloes.in most of the states, As regards the relation, between the highest yield rate of milk of inenilk boyines and the nuuiber of times they are calved, it.ig seen that in rural. India, cows calved eight tines recorded the highest average yield of 1.20 kg., whereas in-urban India’ cows calved 5 tines reported highest aversge yield of 2.16 kg. For the buffaloes, on the other hand, highest average yield (2.75 kgs and 4,00 kg. respectively in rural and urban sectors of India) is recorded for 3 and 7 tines of calving in rural and urban India respectively. In majority of the states, cows which calved 3 times & above are reported to haye neximum yield rate of milk in both rurcl and urban sectors, For the buffaloes, although 15 stetes in the rural sector and 13 states in the urban sector report highest rate of milk yield with number of times calved 3 tines & above, 8 states in the rural areas and 10 states in the urban areas report highest average yield with number of time calved onde or twice only. It can also be seen that the higher the number of times calved the higher generally the yield rate of milk of ineuilk ovines in both rural and urbsn areas of India and it is more, evident in respect of cows, a AG APPENDIX = I SAMPLE DESIGN AND ESTIMATION PROCEDURE Sazple Design 4. Sample Design : The sample design is a stratified two stage design, The first atage units are 1971 census villages in rural areas and urban blocks in urban areas. The second stage units are households, The design has been made self— weighting at the region level in rural sector and at the state level in urban sector. 2. Sample size (Central Sample) : The Central Sample consists of 8512 villages and 9744 blocks. 3. Strafication : whe whole of India has been divided into a number of basic strate so that the basic strata do not out across district boundaries, Districts with more than 1.5 million 1971 census rural population nave been divided into 2 or more basic strata by grouping contiguous tehsils ( or sub-divisions in Bihar, Orissa and West Bengal) homogeneous, as far as yossible, with respect to density of rural population and crop-pattern, so that the population of each basic stratun is 1,5 million and less, ach district with 1.5 million and less 1971 rural population forms one basic stratum by itself except in Gujarat where some districts with less than 1.5 million rural population have been divided into 2 basic strata on consideration of concerntration »f the tribal population and dry areas of the state, Basic strata so formed have been treated as basic strata both for rural and urban sectors, In the urban sector, however, some of the basic strata with very low urban 30pulation content have been merged together to form urban strata with sizeable urban population. In all such cases, however, the separate entity of the district has’ been retained in general except in case of districts with very low urban population where such districts have been merged with neighoouring districts in the same region for urban strata formation. = 16 = Out of 374 districts in India, 366 districts are within the survey coverage of the NSS, Total number of basic strata formed in these 366 districts is 520 in rural areas and 571 in urban areas, Total number of urban strata is 386. 4, Allocation + The all-India sample of villages and blocks have been allocated to the different’ states and union terri- tories considering their investigator strengths and rural/ urban population, Within each state and union territory, the allocated nuhber of villages and blocks have been distributed over the constituent basic strata and urban strata in proportion to their rural and urban population respectively, These allosa- tions have been made multiples of 4, 5. Selection of villages : The 1971 census list of villages has been used as. the sampling frame for selection of villages, Sample villages within each basic stratum have been selected with probability proportional te 1971 census population and with replacement, in the form of two independent sub-samples. 6. Selection of blocks : within each urban stratum the allo= cated number of blocks have been selected with probability proportional to size (pps) where size is a measure of popula~ tion, and with replacement, in the form of two independent sub-samples. Urban Frame Survey (UFS) blocks in cities and towns where UFS has been done and 1971 census blocks where UFS has not been done have been used for selection of blocks. 7. Selection of revenue village : In rural areas the first stage sampling unit, and also the unit of survey is the census village (1971 population census), Generally the survey work is conducted in the sampled census village, But sometimes the sample census village cannot be uniquely identified, In such cases two types of situations may arise - (a) the sample census - 7 village contains two or more revenue villages wholly or partly, Then all the revenue villages taken together is taken as the unit of survey, (b) the watirle census village is wholly con- tained witbin a bigger revenue village which contains, wholly or pertly, other census villages also. Then this bigger revenue village is surveyed. 6. Hamlet sroup/subsblock selesti¢n 1 Viltages/blocks with levge population content are divided into two or sore conmact, arecl, subdivisions of necrly wyual popvation content, These subdivisions are called hamlst-groups and sub-blocks in the case of villages and blocks resnectively. The survey is con= ducted in one of the subsdivisions (formed in 9 village or block) selected at random, of, satiple, homswiwlds t Schedule 13.1 + All the households in a sample villagc/ block arranged dna. ESPIHATICN PROCEDURE The estimation yrocedure adopted for schedule 19- series is described below for rural and urban sectors sepa- rately. MW Rurrl.aester, + Let ¥, denoto the aggregate for region n of any item y on which information ig collected in any schudule of 19eseries. Then ite estimate 4. ts given by ~18- Where y., is the value for i sample household of th °° yegion and My is the multiplier for r*” region given »y “ M, =n @) ogre foe a where a is the total number of households in the r™ yegion a6 estimated unbiasedly from schedule 6,1 (listing schedule), and h, ig the number of semple households available for tabulation for schedule 19 series. 12. The estimates of State aggregates are obtained by aiding the estimtes of all the constitutent regions, 13, Estimates of ratios are derived by first obteining the estimates of aggregates of.the numberator and denominator of a given ratio and then by division at the final stege, Urban Sector 14, In the urben sector, the aggregete of item y at st.te level is Given by a Pen Ey ween (3) yhere M is the celf-weighting multiplier at state level and y, 18 the value of y for the 1°? sample household. 1s. Regionwise estimates are. obtained by restricting the summation to the sample households of. each given region, ye. Estimates ‘of ratios are computed, as ‘in the rural sector, by,estitating first the numerator and the denominator ana then by division at the finel stave. ~19- NATIOWAL SAMPLE SURVEY THOVITITH HOUND (JULY' 1975 - JUNz 4976) PPEMIK'S I List OF T:ELaS desoription of table te ° Nanber of sample villages/blocks and house- 20 holds by states/mion territorics and all~ Indla, 2 1 Porcentage distrilution of miloh minals over 21 conception type ty states in xural and urban areas separately for cach gecics, Be 2 Porcontage distribution of dxy animals classi 23, fiedfage-moup over period of previous Iuote- tion hy, speotes in rural and urban axeas for statos and all-India, 4 3 qantity of milk yLeld and congentrates used 49 por animal in-nilk ty sizo group of milk yield-and ty spoctes in rural and urban areas for states ani all-India, 5s Qentity of milk produced per animal inemite 75 olacsifted Wy mmber of times calved and ine tezval since last calving for sach species in mizel and urban areas of states and all- India, s 6 5 Porventaga dlateimtion ofanvole inal 125 ond quantity of milk yiold por aninel in’ silk olaesitied by wpostos-mni:‘eonsmrtdates uscd in rural.and urben aroap for states, end all-India, Ww 20/ - 20- FAPIOUAL SLPLI IRVSY, 30TH ROUKD 1 JULY 1975-TUNZ 1976 Table (0) 1 Numbor of sample Wllages/locks and households wy states Tira what mo, of 0, of te, oF ne, oF states aanplo sanplo sample sarplo villages . hbuscholds villeges households A) eee eee 9 em) ees (2) 1, Andhra Pradooh ore 16096 168 13851 2, tend 360 8935. 268 5497 3.
